Joyce Carole Cummings

The oldest of two children, she was born on March, 16, 1939 in Rockingham, NC to the late Herman Martin and Kathleen Gore Martin.

Carole was raised in Rockingham, NC and graduated from Rohanen High School there in 1957. Following high school, she moved to Charlotte to attend the Mercy School of Nursing, during which time she met and befriended a classmate, Pat Williams.They became roommates and had a lifelong friendship. Following nursing school graduation, Carole worked at Mercy Hospital for several years.

Throughout her entire nursing career, Carole was passionate about her work. Her career included working for a doctor’s office, a baby nursery, being a nursing supervisor in several nursing homes, and ended with being a home health care nurse. She impressed many with her wound care expertise.

Carole met her future husband, Arthur Cummings, in 1966, shortly after he moved from Amityville, NY to Charlotte NC. They quickly fell in love and were married on March 12, 1967 at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church in Charlotte attended by Father King, who was the priest at Mercy Hospital. After many years living in Charlotte, Carole and Arthur moved to Huntersville, NC and were longtime members of Huntersville United Methodist Church.

Carole was strong, determined, upbeat, and brave; she enjoyed reading, playing piano, and, in her younger days, writing poetry. She was also a notable Elvis fanatic, and she loved her family, and especially her grandson.

Those left to remember Carole include her loving husband of 55 years, Arthur Cummings; her daughter, Heather Junker (Carl); her grandson, Tom Junker; her sister, Kathy Moss (Ed); her sister-in-law, Joan Witt; and her lifelong best friend, Pat Williams; as well as numerous other loving relatives and friends.

Graveside Service for Joyce will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either OperationSmile.org or Huntersville United Methodist Church.
