He was born on August 27, 1950, in Portsmouth, VA to Ralph and Margaret Merritt.
He proudly joined the Navy in 1968 and had a 21 year long decorated career where he enjoyed traveling around the world and collecting stories to pass down to his children and grandchildren. He retired from the Navy in 1989 as a Senior Chief Machinist’s Mate.
After retiring from the Navy, Joe continued his career using his mechanical background at a steel mill for nearly 15 years. Joe enjoyed being outdoors and was especially fond of bird watching. He had a passion for sports and you could always find him watching at game time.
Joe was a devoted husband to his wife, Sheila. Joe was an immensely proud grandfather and great grandfather. He loved his family selflessly and without hesitation. Joe was an active member of his church, South CLT Pres, where he found friendships and community. Joe also found brotherhood and fellowship serving at the Charles M Setzer Mason Lodge.
Joe is survived by his children Crystal (Brian) Hartsell, Michael (Kim) Merritt, Laura Schoening, and Clark (Lisa) Schoening. He is also survived by his grandchildren Elizabeth (William) Combs, Alex (Gabrielle) Richey, Courtney (Dylan) Lackey, Amanda Richey, Jacqueline Pinegar, Cady Shields, Caroline Shields, Carsen Deese, Tyler Schoening, and Travis Schoening. His great-grandchildren include Paige, Ellie, Nathan, Emi, Lily, Paisley and Kennedy. Joe is also survived by his brother William (Diane) Merritt and Aunt and Uncle Mary Lynn and Everett Tiffany.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sheila Schoening; parents Ralph and Margaret Merritt; and siblings Bonnie and Renee.
A memorial to honor Joe's life will be held April 1st at Salisbury National Cemetery. McEwen Pineville Funeral Home in Charlotte, NC, is assisting with the arrangements.
