Joseph W. McCoy, Jr “Bill”, 94, of Charlotte, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at The Pavillion at Brightmore. He was born July 7, 1921 in Mecklenburg County a son of the late Joseph W. McCoy Sr. and Stella Smith McCoy.
Bill graduated from Charlotte Technical High School and was inducted into the National Honor Society. He was also a graduate of The Technical Institute of Chicago, The American Management Association of New York, Queens College School of Management as well as had advanced Engineering studies at N.C. State University and UNC- Charlotte.
During World War II, he served as an Army Company Commander in the Philippine Islands. He was awarded The Meritorious Service Award, The Philippine Liberation Medal, The AFWESPAC Service Medal among others. He was a certified Plant Engineer who was former President and Director of the local chapter of The American Institute of Plant Engineers and a member emeritus of The Association of Facilities Engineering. Bill retired from Lance, Inc. as Superintendent of Engineering and Maintenance. He was a lifelong member of Shamrock Baptist Church where he served several terms as Chairman of the Deacons, chaired numerous other committees, was a Sunday School teacher, youth worker and was a member of the Sanctuary Choir and the Senior Adult Choir. He served and loved his Lord well and loved his family well.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 49 years, Barbara Maness McCoy as well as one brother, Ralph McCoy and one sister Pearl Bass.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include his son John W. McCoy and his wife Patricia Sayre McCoy; daughter, Julia M. Meeker and her husband Alan; granddaughters Holly Sapienza and her husband James and Courtney Meeker as well as his brother James L. McCoy and his wife Ruth.
A visitation will be held Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte. A funeral service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, August 24, 2015 Grace Crossing Baptist Fellowship, 5600 Rocky River Road, Charlotte. Burial will follow the service at Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Grace Crossing Baptist Fellowship’s Building Fund.
