Joseph Edward Doucette, age 52, passed away at his home in Tega Cay, SC on Thursday, August 15, 2024, following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family and an amazing hospice nurse.
Joe was born to Ann S. Federal and Edward T. Doucette on June 5, 1972 in Charlotte, NC. He spent his childhood years in Pensacola, FL and graduated from Pensacola Catholic High School in 1990. Joe went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in advertising from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL.
He began a career in graphic design and media production, and in 1997 he moved to New Orleans, LA. Joe was a talented artist who found great inspiration from New Orleans’ vibrant arts culture, and while he worked in multiple mediums, he discovered his true passion in painting. Joe worked as a graphic designer in the art department of WHERE Magazine New Orleans, where he would meet his future wife, Tracy.
The two married in November of 2002 and in 2003 they welcomed their daughter Allison. Joe chose to start his own home painting and design company in 2003 in order to balance work and family. He loved the work, being his own boss, and meeting some of New Orleans’ most eccentric and engaging residents.
In 2005 Hurricane Katrina had a different plan, and Joe, Tracy, and Ally relocated to Charlotte where they were welcomed by Joe’s large extended family. Joe eventually took a position as a technician, and then project manager, with Piedmont Door Solutions, a job he loved.
Family was the most important thing to Joe. He spent time making Ally’s Halloween costumes, taking her to events, and teaching her to fish in the creek behind the house. He enjoyed countless hours with his many aunts, uncles, and cousins playing games and listening to music, whether it was blasting punk music that brought him back to his skateboarding days, or singing along to some Irish tunes. Always quick to toast with an Irish poem or prayer, Joe loved being in the company of friends. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow rugby players.
He was an accomplished player for teams in Mobile, New Orleans, and Charlotte, often being rewarded with the title of most valuable player. When Joe wasn’t playing rugby or painting, he was building something, fishing in the mountains, or listening to live music. Joe’s sarcastic wit and observational humor drew everyone in. He never turned down an invitation or a chance to lend a hand to a friend or stranger in need.
In addition to Tracy and Ally (Cooper Pearce), Joe is survived by his mother, Ann Federal of Tryon, NC; his father Ed Doucette of Pensacola, FL: his sister Jennifer Doucette (Cole Mills) of New Orleans, LA; sister Camille Doucette of Pensacola, FL; nephew Miles Hornsby of Colorado Springs, CO; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Robert Joseph Keegan Federal and Mary Virginia Federal.
