Born in Charlotte on December 28, 1919, he grew up in old fourth ward. Jon attended public schools, Bryant Academy and Geyer Business School. Prior to his retirement, he was self-employed for many years.
Jon was christened in the old Tenth Avenue Presbyterian Church which later became the Third Presbyterian Church where he retained his membership until his demise.
Jon authored numerous articles and a book about growing up in Charlotte during the 1920’s and 1930’s which included memories of old movie theaters, prohibition days, and the Great depression. He was also devoted to enduring music and especially the works of Mozart, Dvorak, Brahms and Puccini. He was a student of the 19th and early 20th century literature and history.
Being a life-long railroad buff with special interest in old steam engines, he modeled in miniature a typical town and steam railroad representing that era.
He was a past member of the “Loyal Order of Moose” and served as a local air raid warden during WWII.
Jon had a number of intimate friends he grew up with who are all now deceased. However, his past relationships with these life-long friends remained fresh in his memory throughout his life.
Jon lived a long and interesting life free of illness and strife. His life was also greatly enriched by many years of marriage to a much younger and very talented woman whose love and support helped him to retain his youthful mental and spirited outlook in life and the world around him.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Flora Greene Saunders, whom he married December 25, 1952; a son, Roger of Charlotte, NC and a brother-in-law, Dan Greene of York County, SC.
Graveside services are planned for 11:00 am Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Jay Weigel officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Jon R. Saunders may be made to Third Presbyterian Church, 4019 Central Ave., Charlotte, NC 28205.
