John Timothy (“Tim”) Martin, long time resident of South Charlotte suddenly and unexpectedly passed away on December 7 at the age of 70. His beloved wife Ellen of 45 years was by his side. Tim is also survived by daughters Rachel Waldroff (Kirk), Meredith Denson (Aaron), and Laura Dillon (Eoin); his grandchildren Eli, Isaac, Lydia, Benjamin, Emmett, and Jude; and his brothers Mike (Mary) Martin and Matt (Becky) Martin.
Tim was born in Birmingham, AL on October 17, 1952 to the late George Edwin Martin and Sylvia Walker Martin and spent most of his childhood in Atlanta, GA. An outstanding student athlete at Briarcliff High School, he went on to play varsity baseball and football at the University of Pennsylvania (BS 1975), where he met Ellen, and received an MBA from Georgia State University while working full-time in 1978.
He spent his career working in banking, most recently for Bank of America, but was an artist at heart. In his spare time, he loved painting, his writing group, playing the guitar, writing original songs, drawing and singing with his grandchildren, playing tennis and traveling the world with Ellen.
He loved and prioritized spending time with his family and was a dedicated and proud father, soccer coach, passionate sharer of music, road trip leader and fierce supporter and protector. Above all, his family knew he was always there, no matter what. He was known as a quiet, smart, kind and warm man with a dry sense of humor, love of history and deep spirituality.
There will be a funeral on Sunday, December 11 at Myers Park Baptist Church at 1:00 pm, and family will receive friends in Heaton Hall from 12:00 - 12:45 pm, followed by a burial at the Hebrew Cemetery at 2:30 pm. Visitation/shiva minyans will be held at the family home on Sunday and Monday from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
He left this earth too soon and will be sorely missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers and many extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in his name to Tina’s Wish or Heart Math Tutoring, two causes dear to Tim’s heart.
