Mr. Covington, age 82, was born on August 1st, 1930 in Clio, South Carolina, and completed his journey here on earth, October 23rd, 2012. He was the son of the late William Carlisle and Caroline Crowe Covington.
He received his undergraduate degree from Wofford College, and earned his graduate degree from Clemson University. He served with valor in the Army as 1st Lieutenant in the Korean War, where he earned two Bronze Service Stars, and United Nations Service Medals, among others.
In 1991, he retired from the Textile Fiber Department of the Dupont Company.
John was a proud member for 60 years of the Aurora Lodge #33. In his spare time, he loved playing golf at Raintree Country Club, attending ALL home Carolina Panther games, and spending quality time with his grandchildren.
His survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Karen Foster Covington; daughter, Wendy C. Bissette and husband, Monty; their three children, Shane, Madison and Sean, of Charlotte; son, John Clarence Covington, Jr. and his daughter, Ashley of Charlotte; and daughter, Laura Covington Noonan and husband, Joseph and their son, Owen, of Fort Mill, SC. Also, surviving are his sister, Elizabeth Anne Cottingham and husband, Monroe, of Clio, SC.
The funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, October 26, 2012 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, with the Reverend Peter Brown officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment with Military Honors at Forest Lawn East Cemetery will follow the reception.
The family would like to thank Presbyterian Hospital and the Hospice Unit for their excellent care during John’s battle with cancer.
