He was born March 31, 1924 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, to the late John James Adkins and Flossie Wall Adkins.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Emily Johnston Adkins; two daughters, Carol Adkins Zinn (Sandy) of Austin, Texas and Marilyn Adkins Hartley (John) of Missouri City, Texas; one granddaughter, Jennifer Zinn Winkler (Lance) of Missouri City, Texas and a host of other relatives and friends.
Joe graduated from Central High School in Charlotte in 1942 and began a career of 44 years with the Long Lines Department of A.T. & T. He proudly served in the United States Army Signal Corps in the South Pacific during the World War II. He also attended a Purdue University program while in the service and received his Associates Degree from Central Piedmont Community College.
His hobbies included playing golf, traveling and reading.
He was honored to have donated 25 gallons (200 pints) of whole plasma to the American Red Cross.
Joe was a longtime Methodist and was a member of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church, 7400 Mt. Holly Road, Charlotte, North Carolina where a celebration of his life will be held July 5, 2017 at 11:00am with visitation following the service. The burial will be held privately.
