She was born on February 10, 1933 in Rutherford County, NC to the late Charlie and Bess Ruppe Nash. JoAnn graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College with a degree in Home Economics with a Minor in Science in 1953. She worked as a teacher at Rutherfordton-Spindale Central High School and Durham High School prior to becoming a mother and later as a substitute teacher for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system. She was a longtime member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church starting in 1973, taught Kindergarten Sunday School for more than 30 years and was active in the United Methodist Women’s organization and Cokesbury class. JoAnn grew roses and was a member of the Charlotte Rose Society. She often provided roses for church shut-ins.
JoAnn is survived by her loving children, Sharon and Jeff Jarman, Mitch and Kim McMurray, Paula Simpson and Sara and Steve Osborne. Her beloved grandchildren are Josh (Stephanie), Justin, Jeffrey (Shelby), Jaden (Hanna) Jarman, Megan McMurray (Jon) Hays, Blake McMurray, Hunter and Madison Simpson, Bailey and Kendall Osborne. Her great-grandchildren are Kara, Ben and Millie Jarman and JJ Jarman.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Paul Carlton McMurray.
A memorial service to celebrate JoAnn’s life will be held at 11am, Monday, September 27, 2021 at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends during this time. Burial will follow at 4pm at Kistler’s Chapel UMC, 3060 Poors Ford Rd. Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, 6401 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, NC 28215 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Ln, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
