Born July 1, 1939 in Monroe, NC, he was the son of Lucille Cook and the grandson of Hessie Threatt Cook. He had a wonderful upbringing at the Methodist Children’s Home in Winston-Salem, NC. In 1957 he graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School before moving back home with his family in Charlotte to care for his mother, grandmother and younger brother, John (Pete) Alexander.
In 1966 he began his career with the United States Postal Service. He would go on to serve the USPS for 41 years as a letter carrier. It was in this role that he built lasting friendships with colleagues, won numerous service awards, and served the citizens of Charlotte by steadfastly delivering their letters and parcels.
Jerry was a faithful servant to many throughout his life, including the Boy Scouts of America. He grew up as a scout in Winston-Salem and would later serve as an assistant troop leader at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. It was there that he would teach and guide many young men on their path to becoming Eagle scouts.
An avid hobbyist, Jerry was known for his love of woodworking and carpentry. He enjoyed building furniture, home repair and remodeling, and any projects that his friends and family needed assistance with. Jerry was also a frequent golfer that loved to be on the course any chance he could. He was a generous soul that was always willing to share his time, effort, tools, golf clubs, or anything that he thought someone could use. It was always difficult to walk away from Jerry’s home without a gift of some kind from him.
Jerry is survived by his brother John (Pete) Alexander, nieces Tammy, Theresa, and Laura; nephew Steven; and great-nephew David. He was preceded in death by his older brother Donald Cook.
Jerry will be remembered for his humor, reliability, and generous nature by all who knew him.
There will be no services at this time. The family welcomes any condolences made online.
