Mrs. Jeannette Y. Black, age 80, of Charlotte, passed away July 15, 2014 at The Groves skilled nursing facility in Independence, MO. Born May 11, 1934 in Lincolnton, she was the daughter of the late Robert Alvin Yount and Lillie Belle Cansler Yount.
She graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1952 and was a long-time resident of the Derita Community. Mrs. Black was a devoted Sunday school teacher and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit # 345, Eastern Star and Cole Memorial United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Black enjoyed bowling, singing in the church choir, growing plants and flowers, ceramics, crocheting and reading. For 16 years, she was a housemother with Tar Heel Girls State, a program for rising high school seniors. Mrs. Black volunteered for many years with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. She was involved with the PTA and worked as a substitute teacher.
The family will receive friends 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Saturday, July 19th at McEwen Funeral Service - Derita Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
Survivors include four children, Mary Jeannette Davis, Roy Layne Black, Martha Lorraine Black and Marsha Ann Voelker. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Black was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lewis Black, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tar Heel Girls State, NC American Legion Auxiliary, PO Box 25726, Raleigh, NC 27602. Tar Heel Girls State is a week-long workshop for rising high school women in the legislative process where they learn about government, citizenship and leadership.
