Born July 12, 1932 in Gaffney, SC, she was a daughter of the late John and Minnie Pearl Jefferies. Jean graduated from Gaffney High School and attended Winthrop University. She was crowned "Miss Gaffney" and represented her hometown in the Carolinas Carrousel Parade in Charlotte. The "Miss Gaffney" stories were told with pride and humor, especially in her later years.
Jean married Albert R. Jones on November 28, 1953. They moved from Gaffney to Spartanburg and then to Charlotte, where they settled and started their family. They had a long and happy marriage until Al's death in 2000.
Jean was very proud of her three grandchildren and enjoyed following their activities. She loved working jigsaw puzzles and always had a puzzle in progress. Her favorite day was Thursday, when she had a standing hair appointment with Tania Cox at Roland's Salon. Other activities were scheduled at any time except Thursday mornings.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Jean was predeceased by her sisters, Catherine Sanders and Harriet Barbato, and a nephew, Larry McCraw. She is survived by her daughter, Beth Jones Fitch and husband, John; three grandchildren, Jay, Will and Ali Fitch of Charlotte; nieces, Lynda Ramage and husband, Ken of Gaffney, SC and Wanda Sanders of Huntsville, AL; nephews, Wade Sanders of Huntsville, AL and Robbie McCraw and wife, Suzi of Columbia, SC; and sister-in-law, Tid Walden of Rock Hill, SC.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sardis Oaks Nursing Home. Their rehabilitation work with Jean enabled her to return home.
A service to celebrate Jean's life will be held on Monday, November 3 at 2:00 PM at Park Road Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
Memorial contributions can be made to The Children's Home Society of NC, P.O. Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415-4608.
