Jay Franklin Clontz passed away peacefully, March 26, 2025. He was the youngest son of William Henry Floyd Clontz and Edith Love Clontz.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first-born son, Richard Franklin, niece, Cathy Clontz Tanner (Mark), great Nephews, Bray Jack Smith and Chase Cochran, sisters-in-law, Judy Smith Morgan and June Smith Cochran, and brother-in-law, Billy Scott Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley Anne Smith Clontz, his sons: David Randall (Sally), Ronald Gregory, (Lisa), daughter, Michelle Rene Clontz-Shay, (Rob), Granddaughter, Alexandrea Nicole Clontz, Grandson, David Christopher Clontz, Great grandchildren, Alexander Grey Gordon and Murphy Kyle Gordon, brother, William Marvin Clontz, (Shannon), half-brother, Donald Jay Rowe, brothers-in-law, Andrew Morgan and Max Cochran and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
At the tender age of four, he contracted polio and his parents moved to Miami's warm climate where he had the opportunity to swim and regain strength in his muscles. His older brother, Bill, was very instrumental in seeing that he did his exercises. He struggled throughout his life, dealing with the ravages of this disease.
As an accomplished pianist, he shared his God-given talent as the entertainment at Swain's Steak House, as well as being a frequent guest on Kilgo's Canteen television show, private parties and many other venues.
He attended Central High School and was a proud member of the class of '55' during which he proficiently played the French horn in the band. Shortly after his marriage, he began working for Stewart & Everett Theatres, managing the Confection Storage and Theatre Suppliers divisions, until the company was sold. Afterwards, he became the purchasing agent for Display Fixtures Company until his retirement in 1996.
He was an active member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, playing the organ for the early service, teaching the young adult Sunday School Class, and assisting with the scouts, among other services.
He was an extraordinary man, with an extraordinary talent and a caring and loving nature.

A Celebration of Jay's life will be held at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1901 Archdale Dr, Charlotte, NC 28210 May 10, 2025 at 12pm EST
