Jacqueline (Jackie) Blackmon, 85 years old, of Charlotte, passed away on January 13, 2013, at White Oak Manor in Charlotte, NC. Jackie was born on November 23, 1927 and was preceded in death by her late husbands Thomas (Tom) A. Lavin, Sr. and James (Jim) Blackmon, and brothers Graham Jordan and Larry Jordan. She is survived by her daughter Marian Fowler Palazzo and husband John of Charlotte NC, son Edward H. Lavin and wife Sharon of Waxhaw, NC, and son Thomas A. Lavin, Jr. and wife Karen of Dillsboro, NC. She was a loving and devoted mother of 3 children, 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Jackie grew up during the Great Depression and was part of “The Greatest Generation”. She was widowed at age 32 leaving her with 3 young children ages 12, 10, and 5 years old. She was a strong and determined woman who managed her limited income like a small business and provided her children with love and security. Although money was tight, she managed to give to her church and community. Throughout her life Jackie was genuine in her helping and giving to others and in her death she passes to heaven a rich woman. Jackie completed the 10th grade attending the old Charlotte Central High School, present day Central Piedmont Community College and later obtained her GED. She retired from Bowman Dunn Manufacturing in 1999 as a wood lathe operator. She had many unique and varying jobs such as baking Jane Parker pies for A&P Stores and working in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School Cafeteria system where she was known as the “Ice Cream Lady” at Spaugh Junior High School in the 1960’s. But her love was playing the piano and organ for her church. She was the Minister of Music at Duncan United Methodist Church and Big Spring United Methodist Church, and organist at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. She made many lifelong friends.
A Funeral Service for Jackie will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 11:00am at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte NC, 28208. Visitation and viewing will be held 1 hour before Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jackie’s name may be made to Purcell United Methodist Church, 2141 Weyland Avenue, Charlotte NC, 28208, where Jackie is a member.
