Janis was born on June 16, 1947 in San Francisco, CA to the late Maynard and Alice Vance.
She is survived by three of her four children, Julie Mozeley (Dale), Scotty Puckett, and Chad Puckett (Jill). Janis was preceded in death by her youngest son, “Jonboy” and her family has comfort in knowing they are together once again.
Janis loved and took great pride in her grandchildren, Megan Mozeley Waters (Daniel), Kristian Post, Grace Auton (Trae), Judah Puckett, Lexie Puckett, Carly and Colt Puckett; and her great-grandchildren, Indie Auton, and Daniel and Ben Waters. They all benefitted from Maw Maw’s wisdom and humor and mourn her passing.
Janis is also survived by her sister, Madelyn Hilton; brother, Jerry Vance (Regina); and cousin, whom she considered a brother, Johnny Snyder. After raising her children, God found a need for Janis to provide much needed support and sage wisdom to her loving nieces and nephews, Kim, Jennifer, Eddie, Jason, Lynn, Daphne, Amy, and Ali, as well as her many loving great-nieces and great-nephews.
Her family relocated in 1952 to Crossnore, NC where she grew up “mountain strong” and she became as pretty as a field full of daisies. She was a Crossnore High School cheerleader, where she developed some lifelong friendships and memories. In 1962, Janis and her family moved to Charlotte, where she lived until her passing. She graduated from Myers Park High School in 1966 and went on to establish herself in the Oakdale community. Janis also made many friends throughout her career at Valleydale and Oakdale schools and through administrative positions at Clt Block, Pet Dairy, and Stone Restoration.
Janis was a lover of nature, spending a lot of her time gardening and planting flowers or just tending to her yard. She also loved music of all types and it was not uncommon for her to just spontaneously start singing a song. Janis had a great sense of humor and wit, and her ability to convey her thoughts on today’s world did not go unheard, be it softly spoken, or in many cases more directly when needed. She loved her family in a way that was always felt; even today in death, she influences them all.
Janis’ strong Catholic faith sustained her through many hardships in life and even up until her death, she clung to her mother’s rosary when death was near. She rarely complained of life’s hardships and always found joy in the simple things and visits with her beloved family. Janis often spoke of her mountain heritage and often spoke of returning there. We feel her spirit is now in those beloved Blue Ridge hills that she always called home. She truly will be missed by many and her legacy will live long hereafter.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 11:00am until 12:00pm on Monday, April 10, 2023 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. A graveside service will follow at 12:15pm at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
Donations may be made in Janis’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association.
