Janie Runyan Freeman, 84, of Charlotte passed away November 25, 2012 at Sardis Oaks. She was born July 23, 1928 in Earl, NC to the late Seth and Eva Runyan. Janie was preceded in death by her only sister, Betty Runyan Anthony; and her daughter-in-law, Suzanne Freeman.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Sam Freeman; her daughter, Amy (Bill) Howell of Charlotte; sons John Freeman of Denver, NC, Bill (Janney) Freeman of Charlotte, and Dean Freeman of Fort Mill, SC; grandchildren Jason (Katie) Freeman and their children Jack and Claire, Blake (Rebecca) Howell, Stefanie Freeman, Adam Howell, Nick Freeman, Kathryn Freeman, Eric Howell, Alex Freeman, Alyssa Farls, Kellie Howell and her daughter Kami, and Steven Freeman; and many other loving family members and friends.
Janie attended #3 Township High School in Earl, NC and graduated from Gardner Webb College. She worked as an executive secretary for Belk Store Services and Department Store, retiring in 1979 to care for her grandchildren. As a longtime member of Hickory Grove UMC, she was active in Circle and Sunday School. She held many church offices, but her favorite place to be on Sunday mornings was in the baby nursery.
She was an avid gardener who loved reading, crossword puzzles, and Bridge Club. She’ll be remembered for being a Den Mother at Cub Scouts and her angels and birds collections.
A memorial service will be held at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Charlotte on Thursday, November 29 at 2pm. The family will receive friends following the service, 6401 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, NC 28215. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church.
