

Janice Penland, age 72, of Matthews, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025. She was well cared for by her husband of 50 years, her loving family, and her beloved caregiver and dear friend, Michelle Chatmon. She lived a life defined by love, kindness, and determination. Born on November 27, 1952, she grew up with strong values and deep connections that shaped her life’s journey.
A proud graduate of South Mecklenburg High School’s Class of 1970, Janice continued her education by taking classes at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, further expanding her knowledge and curiosity. She was a devoted member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, where her faith and compassion radiated through her involvement with the community.
Janice found joy in life’s simple pleasures and was happiest when surrounded by her family. Her love of reading brought her tranquility, while her passion for watching golf and cheering on her grandchildren at their sports games filled her heart with pride. Trips to spend time with family were among her most cherished moments.
She will be remembered for her incredible strength, courage, resilience, and determination in facing life’s challenges. Janice’s legacy is one of unconditional love, endless support, and the unwavering grace she shared with everyone she encountered.
Janice leaves behind countless treasured memories and an enduring impact on her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she loved so deeply.
Janice is survived by her husband, Kenneth Penland; daughter, Jana Penland Barnhill (Jason); grandchildren, Audrey and Caleb Barnhill; sisters, Ann Vincent Godfrey (Glenn) and Connie Vincent Sistare (Ed); and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert E. and Margaret H. Vincent and her in-laws, Norman and Mary Penland.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 17, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227, followed by a funeral service. Janice will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Ave, Charlotte, NC 28205.
Memorials may be made in Janice's honor to the National Kidney Foundation or a charity of your choosing.
