Janet was born at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, and was proud to be a life-long Charlottean. She was the daughter of George Augustus Jones and Mary Alice Parham Jones and was predeceased by her sister Betty Ann Jones.
Janet is survived by her husband of 34 years, David Meiers and their daughter, Gloria Meiers; her brother, George Jones and wife Carol; her brother, Bobby Jones and wife Nina; and various nieces and nephews, all of North and South Carolina.
Janet was a wonderful wife, mother, and friend. She had one child, Gloria, and took great pride in being a mother. It was the most important thing to her to be a good mother to Gloria. She cared deeply for her cat, Phantom, now age 17. She gave so many, possibly too many, treats to her grandcat, Blueberry.
She loved to do various kinds of puzzles, and the house was often littered with completed sudokus and partially-completed crosswords. She could often be found sitting on the front porch with Phantom doing a crossword and drinking her Coca-Cola. She was always supremely talented at board games, especially after complaining about being “forced” to sit down and play.
Janet put so much care and effort into caring for others. She took care of her husband and daughter during various medical episodes, and was the best caretaker for any given situation. She recently put a great deal of time into caring for Phantom’s various health problems. She loved to buy gifts for other people, and often spent an exorbitant amount of time searching for the perfect item for someone, even if this meant trips to many stores and many returns. She would have done just about anything in the world for her family.
As a young woman, Janet loved to go dancing with her friends. Her stories of childhood and young adulthood are filled with exciting adventures.
Janet worked for years as a supervisor at NAPA Auto Parts on Wilkinson Blvd, and was often singled out in that time for her womanhood and supervisor status. Later she spent many years as a logistics specialist at various computer companies, where she first met David.
She beat bladder cancer 15 years ago, and most recently thyroid cancer last year. She was so tough. “She loved so much and she was loved by so many.”
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 2:30pm Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the funeral home.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.forestlawnwest.com for the Meiers family.
