Jane Glasgow Burns, 87, of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 18, 2012. She was born Jane Ford in 1924 in Milford, CT, to William and Dorothy Ford. Janie led a full and fascinating life. She was an active leader of her beloved community at Carriage Club in Charlotte until recently. She died in Mercy Hospital of complications from a fall.
Janie lived life in service to her Lord, her family, and her many friends. Through volunteer service and generous donations, she shared her love with many in the community. She gladly took on leadership roles in countless service organizations. Wherever she lived, Janie left a better place behind when it was time to move on, and all who knew her were better for it.
Janie married William “Bill” Glasgow Jr. in September 1943, shortly after his graduation from West Point and just before his deployment to the European Theater. Thus began a 50-year globe-hopping life together, never staying put for more than 4 years in any one place. Janie and Bill lived in Germany, England, Iran, Egypt, Brazil, Indonesia, and throughout the U.S. Janie was particularly fond of San Francisco.
After Bill died in 1993, Janie remarried Robert Burns, a retired USAF officer. They spent 12 happy years together, motoring around the country in their RV and eventually settling in Charlotte. Bob died in 2006.
In addition to faith and family, Janie’s interests included travel, golf, aerobics, cooking, fashion, puzzles, and Mah Johng. She loved to entertain and was the consummate host; family reunions at the beach were her favorite times. Janie also found peace at her vacation home in the NC mountains. Support for our veterans and wildlife organizations were lifelong passions for her.
Janie is survived by her greatest legacy, three generations of the Glasgow family, including sons William “Scott” (Gail) and Gordon; grandchildren Sean (Jeni), Jason (Amy), Dane (Jill), Jennifer, Shay, Kristen, and Savannah; as well as 7 great-grandchildren. To her family she was affectionately known as “GGMa.” Janie is also survived by nephew Russell Ford and daughter-in-law Johanna O’Kelley. Her beloved brother, Brewster Ford, and her beloved oldest son, Bruce Glasgow, predeceased Janie, as well as her parents and two husbands.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, March 10th, at Janie’s church, Living Saviour Lutheran Church, 6817 Carmel Road, Charlotte. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with Bill Glasgow. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Janie’s memory may be made to her church, Crisis Assistance Ministry, 500 Spratt St # A, Charlotte, NC 28206, or the charity of one’s choice.
