Mrs. Jane Howie Berry, affectionately known as “Bebe”, 83, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Harris Hospice Unit of Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Berry was born May 14, 1934 in Charlotte, the daughter of the late John Harvey Howie and Grace Sherrill Howie. She graduated from Central High School in 1952 and first attended Women’s College from 1952 – 1954, then the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1956. At UNC she was a member of Delta Sorority, Student Council, and the Women’s Glee Club.
Mrs. Berry resided in Greensboro, NC, Houston, TX, and her hometown of Charlotte. She was a member of The Junior League, Pine Needles Garden Club, First Presbyterian Church (Greensboro) and Myers Park Presbyterian (Charlotte). Mrs. Berry was involved with many philanthropies during her life, and causes near and dear to her included Hospice of Houston, United Way of the Carolinas, Boy Scouts of America, A Child’s Place, Council for Children’s Rights, Crisis Assistance Ministry, and Habitat for Humanity. Her personal passions included her beloved North Carolina Tar Heels, the Carolina Panthers, Extreme Tailgate Society, Litchfield Beach, traveling the world, and most importantly spending time making lasting memories with her extended family and dear friends. She was famous for her homemade pimento cheese, deviled eggs, and spaghetti sauce, and she loved providing a batch to her family and friends, then teaching life lessons while enjoying those dishes together.
Mrs. Berry was preceded in death by her husband James (Jim) Berry, brother John Howie Jr. and son Kyle Berry. She is survived by her children Sherri Ralston (Hank) of Charlotte, John Rountree (Leslie) of Greensboro, Julie Baldwin (Rod) of Dumfries, VA and Brenda Berry of Petersborough, NH.
“Bebe” is also survived by her grandchildren Harris Ralston (Nancy), Frances Ralston, Morgan Rountree, Hannah Taggart (Scott), Grace Baldwin, Carrson Baldwin and James Berry, as well as two great-grandchildren, Claire Elizabeth and Evelyn Jane Taggart.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Berry’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 11th at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.
