He served with the Occupation Troops in Germany after WWII as a Corporal in the United States Army, was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Lion's Club of Mount Pleasant.
He is survived by son, Greg Wellman (Djunna); grandchildren, David Wellman, Kenny Talley and Jamie Talley; great grandchildren, Jerimiah and Mason Halladay and Ayva Talley; brother, David Perkins (Shelly); cousins, Francis Fender, Janetta Church, Dennis Perkins, Joel Perkins, and Larry Perkins; sister-in-law, Carolyn Wellman; niece Amy Wellman; and nephew Kevin Wellman,
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Althea Smith Wellman; son, James David Wellman, Jr.; brothers, Stanley Perkins and Carol Perkins; mother, Eva Rose Wellman Dutton; dad, Herbert Harmon Wellman; brother, Herbert Harmon Wellman Jr., and sister Betty Lou Loschen.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 in the worship center at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church ,1260 N. College Street, Mount Pleasant, NC 28124.
A funeral service will follow at 11:45 a.m. in the sanctuary of the church. Reverend Kevin Kurtz and Dr. Tommy Ross, Jr. to officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers are Phillip Smith, Jim Funderburk, Steve Clark, Hunter Oxendine, Doug McClintock and David Wellman.
