James Elliott Todd, “Jimmy”, 80, died peacefully on July 23rd at his home surrounded by family and caregivers. Jimmy was born in Charlotte, NC on Aug. 6th, 1931 to the late Wayne A. and Sarah E. Todd. He graduated from Central High School in 1949 and finished at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. He began his career in the family business, Todd Tire Co. During the majority of his adult career he owned and operated a chain of laundry and drycleaning plants in Charlotte, before retiring.
Jimmy was a very outgoing person and made friends easily. He was always helping others, whether it was jump starting a car or dispensing words of wisdom to a friend. In fact, his hobbies were people and cars – Buicks in particular. An avid member of the Buick Club for over 40 years, he was forever in search of that special 1941 Roadmaster. His perfect day was discussing with friends the history of the Buick, and history in general. He was a great storyteller, and there were several people that said they learned more about history from Jimmy than they did in school.
Jimmy was also an active member of his church, Caldwell Presbyterian Church and had been a member since he was a child. He was instrumental in helping the church survive some lean times before it was “resurrected” a few years ago. Before his illness, he was at the church several times a week doing routine maintenance that would help the “bottom line”. Being a businessman for many years, this was always a priority.
He is survived by his three daughters, Carole A. Todd, Elizabeth Todd Berretta and Jodie M. Todd, son-in-law, Frederick R. Berretta and grandchildren, Jonathan, Evan, Lauren and Ben Berretta. He is also survived by two nephews, Mike E. Todd and David M. Todd and their families.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, July 27, 2012 at Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1609 East Fifth St., Charlotte, with the Reverend John Cleghorn officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Caldwell Church Building & Grounds Dept. - as Jimmy was very active in that capacity for the church.
