Dr. Tart (“Jim”) of Charlotte, NC, son of James M. and Bessie W. Tart of Dunn, NC passed away peacefully on Saturday August 16, 2014 at his home. He was 89.
Jim was born September 12, 1924 in Dunn, NC and served as a Navy corpsman in WWII from 1943 – 1946. He graduated in 1948 from Wake Forest University and married Sylvia Rogers from Smithfield in 1949. They moved to Philadelphia where he attended Temple Medical School, graduating in 1953. In 1954 he set up Charlotte Women’s Clinic, a solo OB-GYN practice, later adding partners to the practice. From 1984 – 1985 he served as Chief of OB-GYN Dept. at Mercy Hospital. Jim retired in 1993 after practicing medicine in Charlotte for 35 years.
Jim was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church and a volunteer for MedAssist and the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte. An avid Demon Deacon and former “Mayor” of Southminster, he enjoyed his Wednesday poker group with a vengeance and was a faithful patron of Caribou Coffee.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sylvia Rogers Tart; his son (John) and daughter-in-law (Beth) of Charlotte; son (Joseph) and daughter-in-law (Kimberly) of Chapel Hill; son (Roger) and daughter-in-law (Gail)of Fairhope, AL; plus 7 grandsons: David, Edward, Michael, Riley, Patrick, Duncan, and Finn.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday August 19 at 10:00 a.m. at Providence United Methodist Church. A reception will be held at the church after the service. A private interment will be held at a later date.
