James Gordon Stallings, Jr., 87, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at home on September 19, 2016. Born in Spartanburg, SC to Mary Cantrell and Gordon Stallings, Jim grew up in Spartanburg, SC and Charlotte, NC and graduated from Central High School in Charlotte. He earned a BA degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later a Master’s degree in Public Administration from The George Washington University. Jim served in the US Army during the Korean conflict and continued in the Army Reserves until retirement, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. A Mason and member of the Lions Club, Jim had a lifelong career in public utilities. Jim and wife Bonnie Funderburk (d. 2012) called many places home: Charlotte, Lexington, and Burlington, NC, Lynchburg, VA, Boca Raton and Melbourne, FL, and their beloved mountain home at Lake Summit in Tuxedo, NC. Jim delighted in word play and crossword puzzles, was an avid Spike Jones fan, and loved being the entertaining drummer in the River Landing Presbyterian Home Band. A man of faith, Jim’s involvement in church activities as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and active participant throughout his life has been of immense comfort and importance. He is survived by his children: Kathy Schenley of Chapel Hill, Mary K. Brown (Ronald) of Cary, and J. Gordon Stallings III (Pam) of High Point. His five grandchildren will miss their Daddy Jim: Jac (Jenna), Cantrell, and Connor Brown, Joshua Wrenn (Mary Katherine), and James Gordon ‘Shay’ Stallings IV. Funeral arrangements are being made through McEwen Funeral Services, Charlotte. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 23 at 2 p.m. at River Landing at Sandy Ridge in Colfax, NC. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice or the Wounded Warrior Project.
