Charlotte, NC-James L. “Roy” Orr, 86, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2016. Born January 28, 1930 to the late Paul C. and Laurie E. Orr in Charlotte, NC, Roy was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Having spent twelve years working with his father at Orr Motor Co., he finished his career with twenty seven years at AC Delco Division of General Motors as an automotive technician instructor and troubleshooter. He attended Charlotte city schools and graduated from Central High School in 1948 while in the service.
He is survived by his five children; three daughters, Ms. Terry O. Ormand of Goose Creek, SC, Ms. Rebekah A. Orr of Charlotte, NC, and Ms. Leslie Firebaugh of Hardy, VA, and two sons, Michael Orr and wife, Debbie of Clover, SC and Philip Orr of Troutman, NC; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; a sister, Ms. Anne Brown of The Villages, FL and his close friend, Emilie Nelson of Charlotte, NC. Roy was preceded in death by a sister, three brothers and his second wife, Lois.
Roy was very active in the automotive service industry helping to form the Independent Garage Owners Association of N.C. in 1959 and was the first elected officer. He was elected Secretary-Treasurer before they elected the President. He also served as President in 1961-1962. He was active in the N.C. Motor Carriers Association Maintenance Council in the 70’s and 80’s. In his description of life “It was a helluva ride.”
Services are planned for 1:00 pm Friday, April 1, 2016 at Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service, 5301 Albemarle Rd., Charlotte, NC. Friends may visit at the funeral home from noon to 1:00 pm. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery.
