James Banks Myers III, 75, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on September 11, 2023. Jim was born on January 28, 1948, in Statesville North Carolina to Jim Banks Myers Jr. and Nancy Lincoln Myers.
Jim was a longtime resident of Charlotte, NC and was involved in many community activities and entrepreneurial pursuits. After graduating from South Mecklenburg High School in 1965, he went on to earn a B.S. in civil engineering from North Carolina State University in 1969. Jim launched his career in service by enlisting in the U.S. Army shortly after receiving his engineering degree. Jim was an active-duty serviceman from 1969 to 1974 and completed a three-year deployment in Vicenza, Italy. He served in the Army Reserves for another 17 years, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, before retiring from military service in 1991.
Jim returned to Charlotte in 1974 to join his father’s miscellaneous metals and construction specialties business after his overseas military service. Jim’s engineering background and business vision catalyzed embarking on a new water and wastewater treatment equipment business segment with his father under the Jim Myers and Sons family business. Jim’s desire for improving water quality and helping communities helped navigate the company through significant growth and national recognition within the industry until his retirement in 2016.
Jim’s visionary and entrepreneurial spirit was leveraged in 1996 when he launched Jesse & Myers Construction Company, a successful development and construction company in Ocean Isle Beach, NC (OIB) that still bears his name. For several decades, OIB was Jim’s second home, and he supported the small community through multiple business, charitable, and volunteer efforts.
Above all, Jim put family first and was predeceased by his beloved son Zachary Earl, mother Nancy Lincoln, and father James Banks Myers Jr. He is survived by his wife of 41 years Cherry Yountz Myers, son Stuart Gray Myers, daughter-in-law Gerri Marie Myers, granddaughter Wren Olivia Myers, sisters Suzan Myers Bryan and Priscilla Bernard Myers Wieden, brother David Lincoln Myers, many nephews, nieces, cousins, and many others that had their lives touched in a positive way by Jim.
Jim was a model of humble grace, dignity, and positivity throughout his life.
Funeral services will be held at Forest Hills Church, 7224 Park Rd. Charlotte, NC 28210 on Saturday September 23, 2023. Funeral services at 2:30pm and preceded by a family Visitation starting 1:30. Burial with military honors immediately following at Sharon Memorial Park.
