…A time to be born: Life began for James Robert Johnson in Atlanta, Georgia on July 28, 1933. He was the only child of Betty and Oscar Johnson. His mother moved to Dayton, Ohio when “Sonny” was a baby and later married Bennie Wright who raised him.
…A time to plant: “Sonny” attended Garfield Elementary and Dunbar High Schools where he became known as “Skeeter”. He excelled in track and became a Look Magazine All American High School athlete. “Skeeter’s” record for the 180-yard low hurdles still stands today! Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan offered him a track scholarship to continue his track endeavors.
…A time to serve: Skeeter entered the U.S. Army and served two years at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
…A time to lead: After leaving the military, he returned to Dayton to work for Gentile Air Force Station. In 1968,he transferred to the Defense Logistics Agency, Cameron Station in Alexandria, Virginia. At Cameron Station “Skeeter” became known as “Jim”. He was promoted to several positions and became Chief of the Customer Supply Assistance Office, supervising 36 Representatives around the world. He was recognized for having the most diversified staff in the entire agency (Blacks, Women, Hispanics and Whites). He retired from the Federal Government with 39 years of employment.
…A time to love: On April 2, 1982 Jim married his “Brown Sugar” Charlyne A. Schofield. He was the wind beneath her wings, “my best friend and my loving husband.”
…A time to nurture: Jim had eight children, Brenda, Mark (deceased), Craig (deceased), Kimberly, Stacey, Christina, Christopher and Kyndle; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Jim has two daughter-in-laws, Lisa Johnson and Ethel Rainey. Jim also has two godchildren, David Tyler II, and Elijah Prince.
…A time to embrace: In Charlotte, N.C. since 2007 Jim was a member of the Charlotte Social Connection (CSC) and also a member of the Union County Senior Democrats. He served as Vice President and Secretary for Democratic Precinct 28B in Waxhaw, N.C.
…A time to enjoy: Jim’s hobbies were Playing Cards and Sports. Jim loved to play Bid Whist, Spades, Hearts, and Solitaire. He played in Bridge Tournaments in many cities. Football (Washington Redskins) was his passion; he also enjoyed Basketball, Golf, Tennis, Track, and Boxing.
…A time to dress: Meticulous and impressive style …collar starched straight, shirt pressed crisp, sleeves pinned tight with cuff links, sharp creased pants, color coordinated belt and shoes shinned to mirror perfection.
…A time to worship: Jim was baptized Catholic in 1975 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Washington, D.C. He served as Vice President of the Young Adult Club for several years. He also participated on numerous committees. Moving to Charlotte, N.C. in 2007 he joined Our Lady of Consolation Church. He attended and supported his church family as long as his health permitted.
…A time to celebrate transition: On Friday, September 23, 2016 the angels opened heaven’s door for God to welcome Jim to his eternal home. We celebrate as we mourn. He leaves his devoted wife Charlyne, children, grandchildren, great-grand children and numerous relatives and friends.
