Charlotte - James Wolven Hamil died early Wednesday morning, August 14th in Charlotte, NC with his two sons by his side, after a brief illness. Jim was the patriarch of a family that loved him deeply. He was born October 4, 1942 in Hattiesburg, MS to J. T. and Lorene Stevens Hamil, who preceded him in death. Jim grew up and spent most of his life in Mobile, AL.
He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Ann Martin Hamil. She was his wife of 35 years, and passed away in 2010. Jim is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, James Barton and Debby Bemis Hamil of Mobile, AL and Steven Martin and Susan Werling Hamil of Charlotte, NC. Granddaddy is also survived by his pride, joy and legacy, his six grandchildren, Ross Braxton (20), Jackson Waverly (17) and McKenzie Grace (12) Hamil of Mobile, AL, and James Forrest (16), Steven William (14) and Elizabeth Anne (10) Hamil of Charlotte, NC.
Jim graduated from Murphy High School in 1960, and the University of Southern Mississippi in 1964 with a degree in Business Administration. Jim had a long career as an accountant with extended experiences with Delchamps, Inc. and Georgia Pacific.
One of Jim’s passions was the Original Mardi Gras, where he spent over 40 years involved with the Order of Inca, serving as an officer for much of the 1970s, and culminating as President and King of the 1979 ball. Jim also volunteered with Junior Achievement, Matthews Park Little League and Babe Ruth programs, and was the Treasurer of the Azalea Trail Run event in the early 1980s.
Late in life, Jim invested his time in his grandchildren’s sporting and performance events, and loved to just be with his family. Jim was a gentle soul with an accepting and loving spirit that all people, regardless of their tenure of knowing him, were drawn to and appreciated.
Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St., Mobile, AL on Saturday, August 17th from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed immediately by a chapel service and graveside burial at Pinecrest Cemetery.
