James (Jim) Lawrence Grimes of Charlotte, NC passed away on December 23, 2022 peacefully at his home after a short battle with cancer. Jim was born to Lawrence and Mildred Bray Grimes on October 15, 1948 in Cookeville, TN.
Jim is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ginger Grimes; one daughter, Nikki (Shane) Allison of Cookeville, TN; two granddaughters, Abby Allison and Molly Allison of Cookeville, TN; and one sister, Gale Grimes, also of Cookeville, TN. Jim is also survived by his in-laws, Darrell and Marlene Smith of Norwood, NC; his “favorite” sister-in-law, Jan (Guy) Wilkerson; three nephews Kidd (Katelyn) Wilkerson, Kane Wilkerson, both of Winston Salem, NC; Joe (Melissa) Grimes of Dayton, TN; and two nieces, Chelsi Wilkerson and Drake (Alec) Beauchamp also of Winston Salem, NC; and three great-nephews, Whit Wilkerson, Roby Beauchamp and Cooper Beauchamp. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mildred.
He worked as a network engineer in telecommunications for 40+ years; however, his greatest joy, in retirement, was working for Woodies Auto Service for the last 10 years as their best courtesy driver! He loved having the opportunity to serve and meet new people each day. He loved fishing too, and spent many hours on the lake or the ocean, or wherever the fish may be biting, until his health wouldn’t allow. Jim was a passionate Tennessee Volunteer fan. His love for Tennessee could be seen on any Saturday in the fall as he proudly wore his Tennessee orange and cheered on the Vols. He spent much of his free time watching NCIS and Fox News.
He was a true patriot and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Vietnam War. Jim was a lover of life and had an amazing ability to make people smile. He will be sadly missed by many.
A special thank you to Taylor and Marcella with PHC Home Health for the empathy and compassion shown. A HUGE thank you to Jim Hynes who came to the rescue when it was needed the most, as always, as well as a thank you to Atrium Hospice. Also, a very special thank you to Kathie Finocchi, Belinda Foreman, Julie Cunnane, and Angie Ivey for their steadfast and genuine support.
The family will host a celebration of life at the Pineville Chapel of McEwen Funeral Home, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210 on Saturday, January 7th at 2 p.m., with visitation for family and friends following the service.
