Charlotte – Mr. Carroll, 89, passed away on June 20, 2013 at the Carriage Club. He was born on August 2, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a son of the late James Patrick and Helen O’Donnell Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was
preceded in death by his sister, Anna Marie Mansure.
Jim grew up in Philadelphia and moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania during his high school years. He attended Mt. St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, until he was drafted into the Army Air Corps, serving in the Pacific theatre (China, Burma and India) during World War II. After the war, Jim returned to Mt. St. Mary’s College and upon graduation attended the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. His legal career was primarily devoted to representing numerous labor unions and civil rights advocacy, culminating in arguing before and winning two decisions in the Supreme Court of the United States.
Jim lived his life with little care for material things, but with great compassion for social justice. Upon his retirement, Jim was an avid reader of World War II history, Irish culture and history, a surf fisherman, and an enthusiastic spectator of the various sports played by his four grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his only child, James Carroll and daughter-in-law Joan of Charlotte; four grandchildren: Anne Carroll Williams (her husband Greg Williams and great-grandson James Rufus Williams) of Tampa, FL; Joseph Carroll of Philadelphia, PA; Erin Carroll of Washington, DC; and John Carroll of New York, NY; his former wife, Ann Lotz of Charlotte; his sister, Helen Krautheim of Harrisburg, PA; nieces, Stephanie Phillips, Carol Ann Krautheim, and Linda Somers; and nephews, Carlton (“Buddy”) Mansure, Tim Krautheim and Tom Krautheim.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Philadelphia later this summer. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
