Jackson Lee Campbell, 80, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the Harris Hospice Unit Presbyterian Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born July 16, 1931 in Hudson, North Carolina to the late Herman Campbell and Annie Mae Campbell. He was preceded in death by his only sibling, sister, Ruby Martin.
Mr. Campbell served in the US Army Combat Engineers from 1951-1953 and saw active duty in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he went to work for Piedmont Airlines as a purser. It was during a routine flight where he met the love of his life and future wife, Doris Ann Smith. Together they moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where their three boys were born. The family relocated to Charlotte in the mid 60’s where Jack pursued a new career in sales, working in the wholesale food and beverage industry. He had very fond memories of the years he spent working with American Home Foods, Shasta Beverages and RC Cola. He later went on to start his own wholesale brokerage business prior to his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris Ann Campbell; son and daughter-in-law, David and Tammy Campbell of Cary, NC; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Alison Campbell of Waxhaw, NC; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Nelida Campbell of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren, Todd Campbell, Holly Campbell Smith (Graham), Melissa Campbell, Houston Campbell, and Griffin Campbell; one niece, Maryetta Martin; and a special cousin, Amos Stroud.
A service to celebrate the life of Jack Campbell will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Harry & Bryant, Chapel in the Oaks, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to caregiver Michelle Hameen and the doctors and nursing staff at Harris Hospice who cared for Jack these past few months.
