Jack was born in Lanett, AL to Rex Franklin Jarrell and Suzie Gillenwaters Jarrell on July 19, 1933. He went to high school at Lanett High School and graduated in 1951. He went on to earn double majors from University of Alabama, graduating in 1955.
Following college, Jack was in the US Army where he pulled Pentagon duty and then was stationed at Ft. Gordon.
Jack worked the last 10 years with NC Dept. of Commerce Employment Security. His last position was Veterans Consultant in which Jack found great pleasure in assisting Veterans in finding jobs. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Matthews Human Services Council, a member of the American Legion and the past President of the Charlotte Alabama Alumni Association.
His passions in life were Alabama Football, especially watching the games with his son Jay and fellow Alumni friends at Baileys, his annual fishing trips with his Pi Kappa Phi fraternity brothers and watching his grandchildren grow up.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Suzie Jarrell, a niece, Lynn Slaker and a nephew, Johnny Power.
Jack is survived by his wife, Barbara Jarrell of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by his sister, Sara Power; children: Susan Renard (Roy), Jay Jarrell, Jeanne Bost (Patrick), Tara Hicks and 8 grandchildren that he cherished: Rachel, Rebecca, Christina, Kayla, Savannah, Erin, Sadie and Cody.
Jack was very passionate about donating blood and platelets throughout his lifetime so in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Red Cross.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the nurses, doctors and staff at Presbyterian Hospital Main. A special thanks to the nurses in CCU and on 5F for their extraordinary care and compassion for Jack and his whole family.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at McEwen Funeral Home-Pineville Chapel on January 5, 2013 at 12:00 noon with visitation immediately following at McEwen.
