Jack Fulk

Mr. Fulk, 78, of Charlotte, NC, “a leader in the foodservice industry”, passed away on March 30, 2011 after an extended illness. He was born on November 30, 1932 in Davidson, Co., NC, a son of the late Charles and Lucille Hunter Fulk. He was also predeceased by wife, Mildred H. Fulk, and son, Jack Z. Fulk, Jr.

He spent his early life in Winston-Salem, NC. He began his career unloading boxcars for Armour & Company, and from there went into sales with Armour. In the 1960”s, Jack went to work with Holly Farms in Wilkesboro.

In 1971 he opened his first Hardee’s Restaurant in Wilkesboro, NC. As a Hardee’s franchisee, Jack developed the made from scratch homemade breakfast biscuit. In 1977, he and co-founder, Richard Thomas, opened the first Bojangles Famous Chicken ’n Biscuits in Charlotte.

Jack led Bojangles until his retirement in 1985.

He is survived by daughters, Donna Haddock and husband, Tommy, of Durham, NC, Gina Gertzman and husband, Lee, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Brandon Haddock and wife, April, of Augusta, GA, Justin Haddock and wife, Sally, of Athens, AL, Erika Waltz and husband, Matt, of Phoenix, AZ, Cameron and Reece Cox of Charlotte, Jacqueline Fulk and Charlie Fulk of Graham, NC; and four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Harry & Bryant Company, “Chapel in the Oaks”, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service at Carmel Country Club, 4735 Carmel Road, Charlotte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28203.
