Hugh Kirkpatrick Reid 86, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2010 at his home in Charlotte. A lifelong resident of Mecklenburg County, he was born in Sharon Township on March 9, 1924 to Henry Connor Reid and Bertha Howland Reid. Hugh and his sister, Frances grew up on the family farm established by their grandfather, Hugh Kirkpatrick Reid, located in the area of Old Reid Road in south Charlotte. He attended Central High School and graduated in 1942. Hugh went on to NC State University to begin his studies in electrical engineering but enlisted in the US Army in 1943, joining the 707th Bomb Squadron of the 446th Bomb Group as a navigator and participated in numerous air assaults over Germany at the end of World War II. With the war over, he left the Army to complete his engineering studies at NC State and earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1948. He joined the Duke Power Company in 1948 and worked in various positions in the field of power transmission until his retirement from Duke Power in 1988.
Hugh was a Sunday school teacher for many years and was active in the Boy Scouts, receiving the lifetime recognition of Silver Beaver. He was a member of the Wolfpack Club and was active in volunteer work throughout his life. Hugh enjoyed his family, the NC State Wolfpack, detective novels and good barbecue. He was contemplative, modest, wise and witty, beloved by all that knew him.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Patricia Reid; son, Charles Connor Reid and wife, Debbie Reid; daughter, Lillian McCall Reid Gerardi and husband, Richard Gerardi; and grandsons, Dier Kirkpatrick Ward and Steven Joseph Gerardi. He was preceded in death by his wives, Elizabeth McCall Reid and Katherine Moose Reid; a sister, Frances Reid Hawkes; and stepdaughter, Jamie Thompson Bell, wife of Steve Bell of Clover, SC.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 10, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 8947 Albemarle Road, Charlotte NC 28227, followed by a funeral service at Cornerstone Baptist Church at 11:AM on Saturday, September 11, 2010. Interment will be private.
