He was born on Feb. 19, 1928, in Charlotte, the son of the late Samuel Joseph Boyd and Pearl Pridgen Boyd.
He served his country proudly as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in North Carolina and Washington, D.C. Upon returning to Charlotte, he worked for the Esso Corporation, later referred to as the Exxon/Mobil Corporation, and retired as an accountant after 30 years of service. When the Exxon/Mobil Corporation moved the Charlotte office to Houston, Texas, he was asked to serve on their transition team for the six month period prior to his retirement.
He was a member of A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church in Charlotte.
He was a loving husband who always addressed his wife as “Sug”.
Survivors include his wife of almost 68 years, Ethel L. “Buddy” Boyd; sons, Donald L. Boyd (Diane) and Howard Jeffrey Boyd (Karen); grandsons, Bryan Alexander Boyd (Lynn) and Hamilton Blake Boyd (Amanda); his beloved great grandchildren, Allison Blake Boyd and Landon Thomas Boyd and special cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Louis Boyd.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Genteva Nursing and especially the nurses and staff of the Harris Hospice Unit of Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church, 8200 McClure Circle in Charlotte followed by a reception. The Reverend John Petry, III, will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in Forest Lawn West Cemetery in Charlotte
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Harris Hospice Unit, c/o Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, 200 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204.
