Charlotte - Mrs. Kinney, 95, died quietly in her sleep on November 5, 2013 at Wexford House in Denver, NC. She was born on March 27, 1918 in Charlotte, a daughter of the late Catherine Gibbon and Lawrence Stanhope Cross.
Her maternal grandmother, Harriet Alexander Gibbon, was a direct descendant of Hezekiah Alexander. She graduated from Central High School, class of 1937. Helen and David Kinney were married on February 5, 1949. After 29 years of service, Helen retired from Nations Bank (Bank of America) in 1983.
Mrs. Kinney was a life-long member of Third Presbyterian Church, serving as teacher, circle chairwoman, and member of Adult Fellowship. She was a life member of the Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society, Mecklenburg Historical Association, Docent Committee, and the Mecklenburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include her son, David Lee “Sandy” Kinney, and grandsons, David Alexander Kinney and Ryan Lee Kinney, all of Denver, NC. She is also survived by a nephew; two nieces; several cousins; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David Kinney; and brother, Clyde Cross.
The funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Third Presbyterian Church, 4019 Central Ave., Charlotte, with the Revered Jay T. Weigel officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
