Harry Osborne Smith, 92, went home to be with his heavenly Father on Saturday, February 14, 2015. He was the son of the late William N. Smith and Nellie G. Smith of Charlotte, who taught Harry to live his life by the holy word of the Bible. He was a founding member of University City United Methodist Church where he and his wife, Ovid K. Smith were very active in numerous committees and activities.
Harry served in the US Naval Reserve as an Aviation Radio Technician. After is naval service, he graduated from NC State University with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering. This began his life-time support and passion for the wolfpack. He retired from Bell South Independent Relations after a 33 year career.
In addition to his love and devotion for his church and family, Harry was an avid photographer, especially of birds. Many of his incredible bird pictures were displayed at the Schiele Museum of Gastonia. When he wasn’t taking pictures, he took time to play golf and shot three hole-in-ones.
He was deeply loved by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the most honest, humble, Christian, loving man, who was truly devoted to God, family, and his church.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dorothy C. Smith, a son Ken Smith, his sisters, Louise Grass, and Miriam Clarke. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ovid K. Smith, his daughters Lynda Douglas (Gary) and Laura Ashworth, his three step-children; Vernon O’Daniel (Denise), Rhonda York (Billy), and Scott O’Daniel (Missy), twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, on February 19, 2015 at University City United Methodist Church at 3835 W. WT Harris Blvd, Charlotte, 28269.
