Gregory Jay Williams lost his courageous battle to ALS on October 5, 2015. Diagnosed on August 13, 2013, he fought hard as his body weakened and his mind remained as sharp as ever. He read the bible every morning, even when he became so weak the pages had to be turned for him.
A man of great dignity and honesty, Greg believed in doing things right. He was born in Fayetteville, NC on November 30, 1962 and graduated from Harding High School in 1981 and achieved the Eagle Scout award the same year. In 1985 Greg graduated from NC State with a BS degree in Physics. He is a long-standing member of the National Service Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega.
He was employed by Atlantic Coast Contractors as a utility contractor for 26 years. He was passionate about his job and worked his way up to vice president. As the ALS progressed he was no longer able to do physical work and began consultations.
The only child he ever had was a dog named Midget. She shared her life with Greg for more than 18 years.
Greg’s favorite holiday was Halloween. He made props, dressed up and had fun with the kids. He enjoyed vacations from Canada to the Caribbean with his favorite being Destin, FL where he enjoyed deep sea fishing. He collected coins and shared this hobby with his nephews. He really enjoyed spending time with his family; loved wrangler jeans and Ford trucks and a huge NC State supporter.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 25 years, Beth; mother Myrtle Gardner Williams of Denver, NC; brother, Kenneth Russell Williams and wife, Debby of Stanley, NC; nephew Justin Williams and wife Brandy, their children, Summer and Chase of Denver, NC; nephew Chad Williams and wife, Nicole and their children, Madison and Alexa of Denver, NC.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Robert Williams on June 28, 2011.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, October 8th at Real Life Church with Pastor Mike Davis officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00am until 10:45am. Interment will follow the service in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Real Life Church, 15434 Lucia Riverbend Hwy., Stanley, NC 28034.
A special thanks to our wonderful neighbors, amazing caregivers and Atlantic Coast Contractors. We could have never made it through this journey without you.
