Greg was born October 26, 1965 to the late Joe Bill and Nora Simmons. He attended Northwest Guilford and played for NCBCA Hall of fame coach Sandy Gann. He attended Liberty University 1986-1989 and played for former New York Yankee great Bobby Richardson. Greg served as a graduate assistant coach during the 1989 season.
Greg began teaching and coaching at Charlotte Christian School in the fall of 1989 and in the spring of 1992 took over at the helm of the varsity baseball program. During his 30-year tenure with the Knights, he accumulated 733 career wins that included 16 NCISAA state titles, 22 CISAA conference titles. Greg has coached 95 student-athletes who have advanced to play college athletics and 10 student-athletes who were drafted to play in the MLB. He was honored as the coach of the year five times by the Charlotte Observer, three times by the South Charlotte Weekly and once by Impact Baseball .com. He was named ABCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2003, 2009, and 2010, ABCA National High School Coach in 2003 and NCSAA National High School Coach of the Year in 2009. Greg has the most wins by any coach of any sport in Charlotte Christian School history along with the most wins in NCISAA baseball history. In 2016 the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association (NCBCA) awarded Coach Simmons with their highest honor - induction into the NCBCA Hall of Fame.
Greg is survived by his loving wife Renee of 33 years; three sons, Tyler and wife Celeste; Matt and wife Jenna; and Hank; his four grandchildren Lillian, Nate, Joey, and JT. Also surviving is his brother, Doug and wife Gina, and niece Maddie.
A visitation will be held at Charlotte Christian School on Friday, February 3rd from 6:30pm-8pm. The Memorial Service will be Saturday, February 4, at 11am at Calvary Church, 5801 Pineville-Matthews Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.
