Born on March 12, 1928 in Mecklenburg County to the late George Whitford Barbee and Blanche Etta Stewart Barbee, Georgia joined sister Alice.
When Georgia married her beloved husband, Hurley Smith Helms, Jr. on December 17, 1949, her life as the wife of a Union Carbide man would take them to homes in Avon Lake, OH, West Milford, NJ and Tolland, CT. During that time, Georgia taught basket weaving at the University of Connecticut and knitted hundreds of caps for critically ill babies at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Georgia was also a breast cancer survivor.
Once Hurley retired, they settled in Santee, SC where they enjoyed golfing and spending time with their growing family.
Left to mourn her loss are her devoted children Karen Helms Leach and husband Thomas William Leach of NJ and son Bradley Clayton Helms and daughter-in-law Shirley Newton Helms along with four cherished grandchildren and three precious great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Georgia is preceded in death by her parents, sister Alice Barbee Askue, husband Hurley and son Douglas Eric Helms.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Georgia’s name to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
