George was born December 11, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to Irene Thomas and George Kenneth Hartell. He was a graduate of Kelvyn Park High School and Purdue University. He served in the USAF and later worked for IBM, Celanese-Hoesch, and Duke Energy.
George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda N. Hartell; sons, Stephen T. Hartell (Holly) of Alexandria, VA and Matthew R. Hartell (Kerrianne) of Brevard, NC; daughter-in-law, Holly Hartell of Cowpens, SC; grandchildren, JP, Sarah Marie, Katy, Nellie, Mary Banks, Hayden, and Oliver Hartell; and sister, Judith Cumming of Fairport, NY. He was predeceased by his parents; son, James P. Hartell; and grandson, Henry P. Hartell.
He was generous with time and served the community. George was a Mason and a member of the Optimist Club, where he volunteered on their Christmas tree lot for many years. He also volunteered with Myers Park Trinity Little League, Charlotte Junior Soccer, WBTV Boys Town Auction, Room At The Inn at Trinity Presbyterian Church (George was a member) and helping at Sunday services at Asbury Care Center at Aldersgate.
George had a quick wit and loved to tell his “thigh slapper” jokes. He enjoyed running, playing golf, bridge, coaching his sons' teams, and shooting pool with his sons and their friends. Words of wisdom inscribed on his pool table: “Age and Treachery will overcome youth and skill.” He loved to travel in the U.S., Mexico, Guatemala and Spain. George enjoyed non-fiction, history in particular. His sons and grandchildren brought him joy and fun. George was a life-long Cubs fan and became a PSL owner with the Carolina Panthers in 1995.
The service to honor the life of George T. Hartell will be held at 2 o’clock on Sunday, November 26 at Harry and Bryant, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, with Reverend Karen Moore of Aldersgate officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
