Mr. George Broadrick, 88, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Fort Valley, GA and Smithfield, NC, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2011. He was born June 1, 1922 in Fort Valley, GA to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Elwood Broadrick.
Mr. Broadrick was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, Troop Carrier, and served as a navigator in the China-Burma-India Theater in World War II, and in the Korean War, 10th Air Force. He was also stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS as a Stat Officer, and at Warner Robins Air Force Base as a Stat Officer Captain. Mr. Broadrick was the recipient of three Purple Hearts; two Distinguished Service Flying Crosses; two Air Medals; and Silver Wings from the Commander of the Chinese Air Force. He was a member of the Hump Pilots Association.
He attended Harvard University for training as a statistical officer while in service, and graduated from Young-Harris Junior College in Young Harris, GA and Mercer University in Macon, GA. Mr. Broadrick was a former president of First Citizens Bank; served on the Highway Commission under Gov. Moore for four years; was president of the Young Bankers of NC; president of the City Club in 1968; a member of Myers Park and Quail Hollow Country Clubs; a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church; served under Gov. Hunt as a banking commissioner; was on the board at the School of Arts and Science; was a Mason, Smithfield Chapter 84; and was a Rotarian and Kiwanis Club member. Mr. Broadrick was president of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and was the Charlotte News Man of the Year for 1969; a member of the faculty of the school of banking at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge; a trustee of Young-Harris College in GA; a member of the advisory council of Wingate College; a director of the foundation at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; a director of the Central Charlotte Association, the Salvation Army, United Community Services, and Boys Town of North Carolina; and a past member of the Charlotte Civil Service Commission.
Mr. Broadrick is survived by his wife of 65 years, June Terrill Broadrick; daughter, Mary Broadrick Moffitt and husband John; great-niece, Beth Haggerty Odum; great-nephew, James Haggerty; step-grandchildren, Angela Moffitt Bowman and husband Tony, Christina Moffitt Davis and husband Russell, and John E. Moffitt, Jr. and wife Kristin; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special “grandson” Hedley Jennings. He was preceded in death by a brother, Elwood Broadrick and sister, Grace Osborne.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2011 at Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1020 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC, with Rev. William Roth officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday evening at Harry and Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
