Mr. Denny, age 84, died on Tuesday, the 13th of October. He was born the 6th of June 1931 in Elk Garden, VA to Vaught Stuart Denny and Martha Eleanor Snead. He served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1948 – 1952. Returning from the service to Roanoke, VA, he married Margaret Anne Thomas on the 5th of March 1955 and started his career as a structural draftsman with US Steel in 1956. The family moved to Charlotte in January of 1966 and he started Denny & Denny Incorporated with his brother John doing structural steel drafting for Steel Fab, Southern Engineering and Owen Steel of Columbia. He retired in 2006 after 50 years working some of the largest structural steel projects in the southeast.
In 2007, Mr. Denny founded www.VeteransPetition.com and spent years lobbying US Presidents, Members of Congress, Governors and Mayors across America. In 2013, The American Veteran Foundation was formed from his vision to put Veterans first! These organizations were created for the medical & financial support of US military Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and could be funded through the production of Postal Stamps, Savings Bonds and Commemorative Coins. He considered these projects his highest calling of his career, always seeking to leave the world a better place for Veterans. During his lifetime, he has met with Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford and Barack Obama to gain their support. Mr. Denny is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5464 in Monroe, NC, The American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was a direct descendant of David Denny, his 4th great grandfather who migrated from Ulster, Ireland in 1730. David was instrumental in the settlement of Winchester, VA and the Shenandoah Valley and earned an honorable place in the building of this nation. Mr. Denny was preceded in death by his son, Garland Scott Denny in 1997 and his wife, Margaret Anne Denny in 2013. He was also preceded in death by his brother David William Denny. He is survived by his daughter, Sue Denny Tucker of Waxhaw; sons, James Thomas Denny of Charlotte; Charles Keith Denny and wife Vanessa Snead Denny of Monroe; granddaughter, Cassie Tucker Achenbach and husband, Thomas Michael Achenbach of Indian Trail; grandsons, Kendall Ray Tucker, Jr. and Carson Alexander Denny of Monroe; great-granddaughters, Maggie, Lilly and Emma Achenbach of Indian Trail; brother Charles Edward Denny and wife Sandra Denny of Salem, VA; sister Karen Warner Denny of Roanoke and numerous nieces, nephews and good friends. A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 1:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte. A service to celebrate Garland’s life will follow at 2:00 PM concluded with Military Honors in the courtyard of the mausoleum at Sharon Memorial Park. Inurnment will be private.
