Fred David Threadgill, Jr. (84) entered Heaven on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center under Hospice Care in Charlotte, NC. He was a native of Anson County, NC and the son of the late Nancy Della Simpson Ponds, Ellis Ponds (stepfather), and Fred David Threadgill.
Fred began a career in fire protection as a teenager. His aptitude for learning and his strong work ethic afforded him a supervisory role at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. where he built a positive rapport with then Vice President Johnson. In 1969, Fred accepted a position with Crawford Sprinkler Company and moved his family to Columbia, SC. He rose to the position of Corporate Superintendent of Construction. During his 36 years with this company, Fred helped develop the curriculum for Certification in Fire Protection and then served as an instructor for the program at Midland Technical College. In retirement, he grew a comfortable business as a back flow value inspector. Those who knew him well, understood this was simply a vehicle to share the saving grace of Jesus Christ and present the plan of salvation to a captive audience. In 2020, he and Mary Ann moved to Charlotte, NC to ensure a helpful environment when Alzheimer’s stripped his ability to be present.
Fred had many loves in his life, but only God, trumped his love for his wife of 63 years, Mary Ann Threadgill, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughters, Kim Rhodarmer (Frank) of Charlotte, NC and Teresa Spigner (Russell) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Ashley Popa (Chris) of Richmond, TX, Brandon Carter of Columbia, SC, and Brittany Ruechel (Justin) of Davidson, NC; and great-grandchildren, Anna, Ethan and Cade Ruechel and Owen Popa.
Fred leaves two brothers, Ray Threadgill (Anne) of Columbia, SC and Jack Threadgill (Juanita) of Covington, GA. The love bond between these three brothers is unmatched.
Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 15, at Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29223. Service will begin at 2:00 followed by visitation with family and hors d’oeuves.
