Eulogy: Lessons we learned from our dad

The past month has been so unbelievable that we haven’t fully grasped the reality.  What we do know is that we are here to celebrate the life of a truly extraordinary man.  And on behalf of my mom, brother and my dad’s sister, Carol, we are grateful for your love and support.

Almost everyone who met Frank Forbes more than once talks about some of his most significant traits:  his gentle eyes, his absolute attention on the person with whom he is speaking, his intelligence, his kindness…the list goes on and on.  If you read his obituary, you may have learned about some of his accomplishments—there are many.

Tonight, I am going to share some of the lessons we learned from my dad…and I know this list is nowhere near complete.  I think his gifts—and lessons-- will continue to be unveiled the rest of our lives.  But here goes:

Lesson #1:  “Chase a few windmills because you may change the world”.

Dad loved Cervantes character, Don Quixote.  We are hearing countless stories where dad changed people’s lives.  We want to share 2 where people may not know he was involved but he conquered giants:
 
In 1969, I was viciously attacked by a dog in a state park.  I survived the attack because 6 year old Frank Jr. pulled the dog off of me.  Thanks, Frank!  As soon as I was on the road to recovery, dad and mom decided that no child—parent—family should go through that.  He worked diligently with a state senator to write the bill, lobbied for the votes and got the Nebraska leash law passed.  
There is no doubt that Dad absolutely loved the law.  And he understood that justice from the law should belong to everyone—all individuals should have access to a fair process.  He was instrumental in establishing the small claims court in Nebraska so small disputes between individuals and individuals and companies could be fairly resolved—even if it seemed to be small amount of money.    
At his side through all of this was his Dulcinea, my mom who has been his true partner in everything.  As a side note--and if you know the story-- he would remind all of us to be a little more Dulcinea and a little less Aldonza .


Lesson #2:  You are never too old to start playing the cello!

Dad took up the cello when he was 55.  He recruited one of the top cellists in the country who also happened to teach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and took lessons.  And practiced.  And practiced.  And practiced because he had a goal of playing Pachabel’s Canon in D.  Thank you Steav and Andrew for honoring him with that tonight.  Frank and I weren’t at home at that point but dad often commented on how patient mom was listening to him practice scales for hours on end.  When I would visit, he would invite me into his studio (the spare bedroom) and perform for me.  After his years of listening to me practice, how could I say no?  It is quite a memory.
At 71, dad started studying algebra because he felt it was something he didn’t fully master in high school or college.  He would work a half-day on a problem, check the answer in the book and say to Frank, “Son, I worked on this for hours and I can’t get the answer they have.”  Frank—who is quite masterful in algebra—would look at the problem and say, “Pops,  you are right”.  Dad called the publisher and sure enough—he was right.  This happened at least 3 times.  The correct answers will be in the next edition.
If he were here today, he would say to you, do what it is you have always wanted to do—you aren’t too old!  

Lesson #3:  Family isn’t defined by blood.

We are sad that dad’s life-long friend Gilbert Galera—Uncle Gilbert to us-- couldn’t be here.  He was with us earlier this month for a week along with Ed and Dan, two of dad’s other close friends, and they all had a chance to spend significant time with dad.  Their friendships transcended words.  
Uncle Gilbert and Dad met in high school when Dad’s mom and stepfather were stationed there.  Dad finished high school and college in Hawaii and returned for a year when he and mom were newlyweds to work for the Hawaii Supreme Court.  Throughout the years, they remained the closest of friends.   This example of friendship and devotion reminds us that some of our deepest relationships are with the family we create—not instead of our blood family—but in addition to it.  

Lesson #4:  If you can help someone fix a problem, you should help them.
  
There are countless examples of dad spending hours on the phone (and later on the computer) working on an issue for someone—a student, former student, one of our neighbors, friends, or a friend of a friend.  Often times the person was not able to pay so dad would employ the barter system:  his legal services for something of value that person could offer:  yardwork, framing pictures, —usually a special skill that person had.  Perhaps one of the most unusual is a glass and oak case with 2 taxidermied pheasants.  Students over two decades saw that case in his office and it is now in Frank’s room.  All in exchange for some legal work.
The love of the law, the opportunity for justice and fairness was enough for him.  Money was never his motivation.

Lesson #5:  Make time to go fishing…

Dad worked extremely hard his entire life.  But he always made time for our family—rarely missing one of my performances or Frank’s games or track meets.  One of the most significant ways Frank and dad connected was fishing.  Whether it was at our cabin growing up, on a pond with our grandparents, deep-sea fishing with Frank and Rick or casting a line at the Chapman’s pond, he found joy in the quiet companionship.  (This by the way was not the way dad and I spent time together because—again—it was quiet.)
Dad would remind you to find the things that bring you joy and peace and make time for them—especially if it is something you can do with people you love.

Lesson #6:  A pot of soup goes a long way.

Frank Forbes was one of the most generous people that ever walked the face of the earth.    As a matter of fact, you had to be careful around him because if you mentioned something you wanted, he would move heaven and earth to get it for you.  This generosity extended to daily acts of kindness including making a huge pot of soup, packaging it up and delivering it to people all over Omaha.  He would just show up and say, “here’s a little something from Sue and me”.  This caring…kindness was alive and well during his stay in the hospital when—if he was awake—he would greet each health care worker who came into his room.  He would gesture for them to lean in and he would pat their face, pat their hand, give them an OK symbol or write them a note on his clipboard.  The last note he wrote on his clipboard was on Tuesday afternoon when one of the doctor’s asked how his pain was.  He indicated he wanted his clipboard and started writing.  H…E…L…L… at which point—no surprise to those of you who know me-- I interrupted and said, “Your pain is hellish!?” and he kept writing O and held up his note to the doctor, “Hello”.   And the doctor stopped questioning him and said, “Hello, Mr. Forbes”.  Dad then gave me a look that said, “Patience, daughter, patience.”
He never took anyone for granted and it was a beautiful thing to be a part of.
Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we all approached life with a little of that?

Lesson #7:  There’s nothing like a cashmere sweater.

Dad really liked nice clothes—probably because of a childhood spent in poverty.   What many people didn’t know is that he had an exclusive personal shopper:  our mom!   What I learned last week from Uncle Gilbert was that he was actually dad’s first personal shopper…he explained to me that dad was one of 5 Caucasian students at their high school and he dressed completely different than everyone.  Uncle Gilbert decided to take him under his wing and take him shopping for some decent clothes.  What do you want to bet there were some Aloha shirts in the bag?  Dad’s love of Aloha shirts continued as many of you know until his death.
On a serious note, mom and dad believed (probably based on dad’s early years) that even in their poorest days, they were never going to compromise on 2 things for Frank and me:  quality shoes and dental care.  It might mean weeks of beanie weanies and mac & cheese but we were going to have good shoes and take care of our teeth.  

Lesson #8: Life’s too short to eat stale popcorn.

My mom loves movies and she would convince my dad every once in awhile to go.  The highlight of the movie for him was fresh, hot popcorn.  He relished it.  I almost think the quality of the movie was determined by the quality of the popcorn.  If the popcorn was bad, it was going back and he would wait patiently wait for a new batch.
This same lesson could apply to his favorite non-alcoholic beer:  Clausthaler.  Why drink O’Doul’s when you can drink an ice cold German non-alcoholic beer.  You will even have a chance to try a little later at the reception.  He started asking for it in CCU and we explained he couldn’t have any until he passed a swallowing test.  Sure enough, 3 days before he died he passed a swallowing test in the Hospice Unit and later that day he had some sips of his favorite beverage.   That was his last good day.  But he sure accomplished his goal!

Lesson #9:  Clap loud, yell bravo and let people know they did a great job!

When dad watched a performance of anything, he acknowledged how much the performer rehearsed and how hard they worked.  Or the pain and suffering the dancers endured while learning the numbers.    He was able to separate if he liked the piece from the quality of the performer—and he rewarded the performer (often times me) with the loudest clap, the biggest bravo and a huge smile.  This extended beyond the stage to customer service people who helped him, car salesmen who got him a great price, orchid farmers who cultivated a beautiful plant.  He believed in recognizing peoples talents and letting them know.

Lesson #10:  Let your children know how much you love them, your work, your spouse, your life and your faith.

We have never doubted the love our parents had for us—even when it was tough love.  We never doubted dad’s love for teaching and the law.   Both Frank and I have wonderful memories of going to work with my dad and this was long before “take your child to work day”.  He would even call on us in class—usually a question we had discussed at the dinner table.  His students were amazed when a ten year old could talk about the Uniform Commercial Code or negligence.
We never doubted how much he loved our mom.  Their devotion to each other through good times and bad was evident to anyone in their presence.  When asked by a nurse in CCU what their secret was to almost 49 years of marriage, my mom said, “Don’t let the little stuff get to you and remember why you fell in love.”  That is why for so many of us, Frank and Sue is really one run-on word:  frankandsue.  And what a tremendous example of devotion and commitment.
And we never doubted his devotion to his faith.  He chose to be a Catholic when he was a teenager after living with Uncle Gilbert’s family and seeing their deep devotion.  He had a deep and significant relationship with God.   He would evangelize without getting pushy (OK…maybe a little pushy) but only because he believed so deeply.  My mom converted once they started dating and later in life his mom and sister converted.  I know he is in heaven right now debating with Henry VIII, Martin Luther and John Calvin about the one true faith!   St. Thomas More and Thomas Aquinas are probably right by his side saying, “You tell ‘em, Frank!”

On behalf of our family, you are important to us.  Dad loved you and so do we.  We will miss his daily lessons, silly songs, facial expressions and wisdom but we are grateful for every minute we had.  

Instead of seeing his eyes twinkle, we will see the stars.  Instead of hearing his booming voice, we will hear the thunder.  Instead of seeing his smile, we will see the sunshine.  And instead of holding his hand, we will feel the breeze.  That works for me until we meet again.

May God bless you at this time of sorrow.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  I have   many good memories of our years of friendship.

I  remember back in high school, when Carol and I would sleep over on the weekend.  Frank would wake us all by standing at the bottom of the stairs and singing at the top of his lungs while he was cooking breakfast for everyone!  It was always such fun.

My Dearest Uncle Frank,
 
To the BEST Godfather a girl could ever have!!!  And you are exactly that!  Someone who smiled and kissed me evertime I came in the room, who was proud of me all the time, who supported me in whatever I wanted to do, someone who gave me great advice (whether it was on the boy I was dating, or decisions on a career), and someone who loved me unconditionally!!  You are all that to me and more!!  Words can't express just how much you mean to me!  I love you so very much.
You taught me to stand up for myself, to be honest and brave, to respect and see the good in people,  be caring and loving to others and most of all to believe!!!  Believe in myself and others!  You are a perfect example of that.  A person that I look up to and admire with all of my heart.  I thank you for being that person to me!!  "A wise teacher" is what I've always that of you as, and that you are!!!  You are loved so very much, not only be me, your god daughter, but by any one who is lucky enough to have known you!!!  You are in my thoughts and prayers always.  Good bye for now my dear Uncle Frank.

To my wonderful Forbes family -- I just wanted to share a few of my favorite Frank memories - they bring a smile to my face and I hope they will for you as well.

One of my first favorite memories was at my first pool party when the "Hairy Chest" contest was held and Frank came prancing around the corner with moss growing out of his shirt.  He wasn't satisifed just to walk around -- he actually pranced.  What a hoot!

Another of my favorite memories is having Sue and Frank read the intercessory prayers at our wedding.  Sue was holding back tears and Frank got a chuckle from the wedding party and the guests when his portion of the prayer asked for Marc and I to be together in our "ripe old age."  Frank said it in his own way with a wink and a sly smile that got us to chuckle aloud at the altar.

I'm also like Judy in that I've always admired the loving smile Frank always had for his two favorite choir girls, Sue and Anne Marie as he came back from Communion.  It had love written all over it.

And there is the way in which he so authoritatively and lovingly sat with Catherine and Marc in the pews while we sang.  I'm so glad they have had that interaction with him - they will be the better for it as we all are.

So, so glad to be able to sing with you Anne Marie to Frank at his bedside.  When you sing, you pray twice.

I love all of you so much.  You are like a second family to me and my heart is breaking for you and for all of us but I know God is smiling and is waiting to take Frank in his arms.

i'll never forget the time you taught a class for me when my daughter was ill. You walked into the class, stood on a chair, gave the lecture and left--all without telling the students who you were. I laughingly told the students that you were the phantom professor.

God bless you, Frank.  I fondly remember the times we had at UNO when you were department chair and I was a lowly assistant professor.  My wife Gloria and I appreciated all the people in the department, the Christmas parties at your house, and the support you gave all of us.  


Gloria fondly remembers Frank's lecture on bailor and bailee in the business law class as well as his lemon law arbitration work.  Time certainly flies when you are having fun since this was too long ago to contemplate.

Frank, I know you are showing your family how much grace you have, in health or in sickness. I pray that you are comforted by God's hands at this tiime, either through the kindness of the staff, of through the loving thoughts and prayers you are receiving from this log. 

Frank, my family will never forget your kindness to us when my mom was sick. You went out of your way to help us, and we are forever grateful. 

I wish there was more I could do for you now, but I know that prayer is better than anything. You are in my prayers, and those of my family. Your family is in my prayers also.  I wish I was there to help.

Frank: remember 34 years ago this fall... the UNO auditorium... our second Business Law I class of the semester...  you asked if anyone knew anything about fixing cars?... I raised my hand... you said "see me after class"... I did... it turned out to be a simple problem... I fixed your car... you thought I was a genius (well maybe not a real genius)... after that I would come over to your house for Sunday dinners with you, Sue, little Frank and little Anne Marie... after dinner you and I would debate the law (you always won)... I got an "A" in Business Law I (which was hard to come by in those days)... you wanted me to go to law school... I didn't want to go... you wouldn't take no for an answer and "coerced" me into going to law school... I did... I graduated and became a lawyer... you were proud of me... and you have been my friend, surrogate father and mentor ever since.  

The Lord works in strange ways my friend... he did then, and he is now.  Keep up the good fight... but know, as I found out, 34 years ago, that just because you may lose the battle doesn't mean you've lost the war.  Apparently, God has a plan for you, which is even better than the plan you had for me so long ago.  Be at peace and know you have made a HUGE difference and are loved by many.

Thank you Anne Marie for the call.  My heart goes out to you, Frank and your whole family.  I have truly been blessed to have Frank in my life and have missed a good friend since our lives took us to opposite ends of the U.S. several years ago.  Frank has been such a positive influence in my life and a good friend to me and my extended family.  I learned a lot from Frank over the years and cherished our times together, a true inspiration in my life.  Frank's endless loving and generous spirit will remain with me forever as will the love received from your entire family.  

Please tell Frank that I love him and give him a hug for me.  Also, tell him I wish there was a football game on tonite so we could have one more bet.  I wish I could be there to say and do myself.......

I finally got on the website this morning only to read Frank left us early this morning.  Thank you for reporting his peaceful expression!  What a comfort that is to all of us.  And, after the past month...all his suffering...we thank our Heavenly Father for mercifully taking him home.  The LORD God Himself promises us over and over again in His Word that He never, never ,never leaves us....most assuredly NOT! (Amplified Heb13:5b)  So, the moment his heart stopped beating, we trust Jesus took him by the hand and said "Come with me...I have everything ready!"

Know our love and prayers are with you at this time.  We know your hearts are breaking, but God will send comfort in very special, personal ways.  

You are very dear to us.  May you feel His strength as you walk through these upcoming days.

I have had a day of remembering Frank's energy, spirit, and the way he had of making me laugh -- he was a blessing in many lives including mine -- Greg and I have treasured his friendship -- there is certainly a little less light in our world now...we are so glad you are having a memorial service for him in Omaha...we will certainly be with you in our hearts, dear Sue, Anne Marie, and Frank, during these days ahead of loss, sadness, and, I think, joy, too at having been close to such a person as Frank was. Dear Uncle Frank,
 
I have written and rewritten this letter several times and I am struggling to find the right words to express how much you mean to me and how grateful I am to have someone as special and wonderful as you in my life.  When I look back at my childhood , there are so many wonderful memories of our families time together.  Your larger than life personality and booming voice will forever bring a smile to my face.  I remember how you used to play the piano and sing  when you came to our house and it brought such joy and happiness to whatever holiday or event we were celebrating.   I felt and feel so loved by both you and Aunt Sue.   You had (and still do) such a genuine interest in our accomplishments and in our setbacks and it is not often you find that type of support.  I just want to say thank you for that and to let you know that it was noticed and appreciated. 
 
I am so thankful Cole was able to see you recently and he still talks about his Uncle Frank and Aunt Sue so I know you have also touched his life in a positive lasting way.
 
You will always have a special place in my heart and in my many many wonderful memories.

I was lucky enough to have taken a class from Dr. Forbes at UNO.  He made learning fun with his dynamic teaching style and his enthusiasm.  Dr. Forbes will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  I am deeply sorry for the family's loss.

It is with sadness that we have to say Aloha to Frank.  Memories of youth and sharing time at Farrington as well as our first year at Univ. of Hawaii. We were priviledged to have been on the receiving end of his kindness, from soup on the day we moved in across the street to dinners during my chemotherapy days.  Who could forget the hours of choir at SEA and that great voice of his...oh, those tenors!  Frank added so much to so many lives, we were blessed to know him.

We're so sorry to hear about Frank's passing. He was a true friend to us and the Beal family. At UNO, you always knew when Dr. Forbes was teaching - you would hear him singing in the hallway on his way to class, his booming voice echoing throughout all of Roskens Hall. He would saunter into a classroom with his coffee mug and start his lectures off the top of his head. I was honored to be his work study before my teaching days back in the late 80's. When I started grad school, he wanted me to be his graduate assistant. I politely declined, explaining that I'd rather assist the finance dept. since that was my major. He agreed & was instrumental in getting me the GA position in the finance dept. If not for him, I would probably not be teaching finance at UNO these past 20 years. Once he gave a 50 question True/False exam to his students. He deliberately made every question False and when a student called him out on it (using words I cannot repeat), Frank was so proud of himself and said "Thank you very much!". It was a classic Dr. Forbes move. He left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was very smart, kind, & had a generous heart.
He will be missed. All of our prayers are with you!

I want to express my condolences to Frank's family. I had the distinct honor of meeting, then working very closely with Frank beginning in 2007, and through this past year. I have the utmost respect for Frank who demonstrated great courage, conviction and ethical and moral fiber by taking this very demanding burden on. He worked tirelessly for those he volunteered to serve, and at a point in his life and career when most of us would opt for something much less demanding. I could confide openly, and in confidence with Frank and knew he was a man of credibility I could trust. We could not have been successful in this endeavor without Frank's help, his leadership, as well as his friendship. I first met Frank in 1989 totally by chance after moving to Omaha wife my first wife that was dying of cancer.  Frank heard about our situation thru Father Tony at St. Elizabeth Ann's.  He immediately came to our rescue helping us with some insurance issues we were having with her insurance company.  I learned very quickly what a great and generous man he was.  Over time our friendship continued even after I lost my first wife.  He and Sue were also responsible for my meeting my second wife, Carol, who is one of Anne Marie's best friends.   I don't think he will ever know what a great influence and friend he was to me and how much he will be missed.  You always think someone will  be there, but his memory will last for the rest of my life.  God bless and love you Frank....

I'm proud to have known Frank and to have had the opportunity to work with him and be the recipient of his kindness and wisdom.  He was a fine lawyer and a great teacher.  His friends share your loss.  I'm confident he is making people smile in heaven!  I will never forget traveling down the Colorado river in a raft with Frank !!!  A great guy.

Frank was a great friend and teacher who touched and enhanced many lives.  I often meet former students who speak of the impact his classes had on their lives.  I am still teaching the class he started me with 20 years ago, and I draw on the things he told be every week.  Frank is a good man and the world is a bit less without him.

How do I begin to describe a man that has always been a beaming voice and presence in my life.  I am truly blessed to have had Frank in my life from such a young age.   From his absolutely fantastic cooking to his solid advice he will never be forgotten.  I am so glad I was able to spend time with him for a week before he passed and be able to see the sparkle in his eyes and see the love and affection he had for all his family and friends.  He was a powerful and loving influence and will never be forgotten.  I am stunned and saddened by his loss but know in my heart that he is with God and will be waiting with his arms wide open when it is my time.  Love you Frank!!!

I had the distinct privilege of being one of Frank's Business Law students at UNO in the 70's.He was the toughest, fairest and most enjoyable professor I had during my college career. You didn't come to his class unprepared more than once. I admired and respected him as a professor and as a great person. My condolences to his family.

It is a privilege to have known Frank Forbes, truly a "Renaissance Man". I am awed by his accomplishments, particularly because he was the classic humble man.  I will miss him and the "hugs" in which he enthusiastically enveloped each of us. It unabashedly said, you are my true friend! I know he is smiling down on us while giving his warm embrace to all the saints. As it is written: he has fought the good fight, he has finished the race, he has kept the faith.
