Fay Mitchell Choate Hand passed away peacefully on Friday, February 26, 2016 at her home. She was born in Charlotte, NC on February 17, 1932, the daughter of the late Claire Fay Bond and Calvin D. Mitchell, Sr. She attended Charlotte public schools and graduated with honors from Duke University in 1954 with a degree in Anthropology.
As a young woman, she was a gifted equestrian, and later, as a life-long member of Charlotte Country Club, she became an amateur golf champion and an avid tennis player. In addition to sports, she loved traveling to foreign countries and immersing herself in the culture of many diverse nationalities. She also loved business, and for many years was an active member of Charlotte's real estate community.
Fay was a member of many service organizations, including the Charlotte Junior League, the Children's Theater, the Mint Museum and Barium Springs Home. She loved gardening, and was an enthusiastic supporter of Wing Haven and Brookgreen Gardens.
Surviving Fay is her son, William Bruns Choate, Jr., his wife Alicia and two grandsons, William B. Choate III and Mitchell J. Choate; brother, Calvin D. Mitchell, Jr., and wife Tanya; sister, Mary May Gillespie, nephew, David Mitchell Gillespie and wife Sinclair; and three great-nephews, Richard T. Gillespie, Walker R. Gillespie and Harrison Gillespie.
Following a private family service, a celebration of Fay’s life will be held on Sunday, February 28th, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm with the receiving of friends at the home of Bill and Alicia Choate, 2241 Pinewood Circle, Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region (HPCCR), 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
