Evelyn Peters Welch, age 83, died on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, in Charlotte (NC). Born in Salisbury (NC) on December 22, 1934, Evelyn grew up in Elkin where her father worked with the local YMCA. After graduating from high school, Evelyn attended Appalachian State University where she met her husband Harry L. Welch. Harry would later serve the Y in Charlotte, opening the Harris and Downtown YMCAs before his death in 1987.
Evelyn’s love of music, singing, and all things family remained a constant throughout her life. She was a church choir member at First United Methodist, Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian and Siler Presbyterian. Evelyn performed with the Charlotte Choral Society’s Singing Christmas Tree for more than 20 years and was the Angel at the top of the 1984 tree. However, her greatest joy of all was the love she shared with her children and grandchildren.
Once a high school and college swimmer herself, Evelyn (Maw-Maw) was a loyal family sports fan and enjoyed watching her grandchildren bowl and play T-ball, soccer, Little League and high school baseball and volleyball. She also loved every one of their school musicals, dance and piano recitals, children’s choirs, and singing on the beach.
Evelyn created many Maw-Maw memories for her grandchildren: her still famous veggie casserole, fun-filled Christmas Eves, the creative Halloween Costumes she made for them, family vacations at North Myrtle Beach, craft projects, her navigation of school carpool lanes, and Sunday lunch after church.
Evelyn is survived by three children: Ann Seagrave, Mike (Luanne) Welch, and Harry (Debra) Welch; seven grandchildren: Katie Seagrave, Zach Seagrave and Charlie Seagrave, Joe (Lauren) Kirchgassner, Carly (Tyler) Slaggert, Christopher Welch, and Angela Welch; and one great-grandson.
The Welch family is truly grateful for the kindness and care provided by Evelyn’s healthcare workers in recent years and for the love and support of her many friends her entire life.
Services will be held on Sunday, January 28 at Harry & Bryant with visitation from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM and funeral service at 2:00 PM followed by a graveside service at Forest Lawn East.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Evelyn’s memory to Easterseals UCP North Carolina.
