Evangeline Campbell, fondly known as Vangie, was reunited with the love of her life, Leroy Campbell, at 9:18 pm On Wednesday, March 7th. She had a wonderful birthday party just nine days earlier, when she turned 92.
Evangeline had been a Charlotte resident since 1953. She and her husband migrated there from the mountains, like so many others of the greatest generation. They brought two young sons with them and firmly planted roots. However, she never forgot the culture and love for her mountain home. She and Leroy instilled that in their sons. She was still “raising” a garden until just a few years ago.
Evangeline was born in Robbinsville, North Carolina and raised on a farm near Hiawassee, Georgia along with her nine siblings. There was plenty of love and hard work to go around.
Evangeline relocated to Lincolnton, North Carolina last July. She continued to live independently there very near her two sons.
Her wonderful smile and constant concern for others endeared her to so many people at her church and in her community. She was a great cook and her fried chicken would disappear from any food line in a matter of seconds. Her desserts would evaporate in much the same way. She was totally unpretentious and a good hearted person. She came from a time when people seemed a little more gracious. She loved to dance and was doing so at her family reunion last Memorial Day weekend.
Evangeline was very proud of her family and loved them dearly. She is survived by her sons, Ronnie (Carol) and Steve Campbell, Her four grandchildren and spouses, Jason (Luibov), Michelle (Bobby), Clayton (Yelena) and Anna Catherine (Neal), and her nine great grandchildren, Mykala, Alexey, Ella, John, Margaret, Evangeline, Mary, Emma and Seraphima (just two weeks old). She took every opportunity to encourage all of them and for that matter, anyone else that needed a day brightened. She just loved people.
Services for Evangeline will take place in Charlotte at Durham Memorial Baptist Church on Sunday, March 11th at 2 pm. Receiving friends will immediately follow the service. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Montagjard Ministry of DMBC, 1601 Toddville Road, Charlotte, NC 28214.
Internment will take place a week later at the Carver Cemetery on the shores of Lake Santeetlah near Robbinsville. She will be laid to rest near her aunt and her beloved daughter in law, Linda. Later Leroy will join her in the heart of their beloved mountains.
