The late Eugene Watson Roberts commonly called Watson was born on April 9, 1969 unto the union of Mr. Saifa G. Roberts and Mrs. Hawa Vincent Roberts from the City of Tubmanburg, Bomi County, Liberia West Africa. He began his early primary education in 1976 at the J.L. Parvola Elementary School in Kondeh, Tubmanburg, Bomi County. He later enrolled at the St. Dominic’s Catholic Elementary Junior and Senior High School in Tubmanburg in 1979 where he completed high school in 1988. Watson met his wife in Tubmanburg Bomi County and got married in 1997. The union is blessed with six children: Loraine, George, Serena, Nancy, Jennifer, Vanessa and Ronald who he adopted as his son.
In his quest to further his education, he matriculated at the Forestry Training Institute in 1988 in Tubmanburg where he studied basic Auto Mechanics and General Forestry. Due to the Civil War in Liberia in 1990, the program was short-lived thus preventing him from completing his course of studies at the Forestry Institute.
He embraced the Christian faith at an early age when his late father Deacon Saifa G. Roberts introduced him and his siblings to the faith through early morning devotions, Sunday school and regular worship services at the Elijah Baptist Church, Tubmanburg. He enjoyed playing the guitar and keyboard for the church’s worship team. In 1986, he gave his life to Christ and was baptized at Elijah Baptist Church under the watchful eyes of the late Reverend Simeon B. Roberts. About a year following his baptism he later joined the choir where he served as choir director until the inception of the war.
While at the refugee camp Watson along with his brother, Andrew and few internally displaced persons sensed the need to continue to worship the Lord in the midst of hardship and suffering. This longing led him along with brother Andrew and a few displaced brothers and sisters to champion the establishment of Livingway Baptist Fellowship in 1994, which is a full-fledged church today. Watson and his wife Vivian made significant contributions to the church through providing food to men and women of God that went to preach the Gospel at the camp. Watson later relocated to the US, where he first stopped in New York and later made his way to Charlotte, North Carolina where he resided until his untimely demise.
While in Charlotte, the zeal for the work of God continued in him as he and his family became active members of Gilgal Christian Center under the leadership of Pastor Jerry Udoh. He was in the employment of Data Banking Company for 17 years as a supervisor until his death.
Late Eugene Roberts impacted every life he came in contact with, including some of you present here and listening to the reading of this biography, in many positive ways. He saw the opportunity to be a blessing to somebody as a divine obligation. Anyone who knew him well would speak about how he showed love not only to his family but many of his friends and strangers. He spoiled his children with love and affection only a father could give, always advising them to take school seriously and pushing them to excel. Countless people can speak on how he assisted in getting them jobs and how he acted as a support system whether it was 3am or 3pm. If you needed help and you called Eugene, he’d be there; that’s just who he was - a God fearing man who put his trust in the Lord up until his last breath. He worked as a humble servant, leader of the Lord and always looking to render help to those in need.
Eugene commonly called Watson, met his untimely death on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the precise hour of 10:30pm Eastern Time following a period of terminal illness. He has left to mourn his death his wife, Vivian; six children, Loraine, George, Serena, Nancy, Jennifer and Vanessa and his late brother, Steve Vincent and his son Ronald who he took as his own; step mother Madam Musu Roberts; his uncle Lincoln Vincent; several brothers and sisters including Kenneth, Andrew, James, Nathanial, Baryon, Ishmael, Saifa, Patrick, Bendu and Tenneh Roberts and a host of other relatives and friends in the US, Canada, Morocco and Liberia.
