Ernest Gordon Poole, Sr., 91, passed away on January 31, 2021 as a result of complications from a fall suffered at his home in Charlotte. He was born January 14, 1930 in Richmond, Virginia and was the son of the late Loy V. Poole and late Nora Kincaid Poole. He grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Harding High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from N.C. State University in 1958 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering and spent his career designing textile machinery.
He is survived by his son, Ernest Gordon Poole, Jr., of Charlotte, N. C.; his brother. Charles Allen Poole, of Warner Robins, Georgia; his sister, Laura Poole St. John, of Grantham, New Hampshire; his nephews, Robert Poole, of Wichita Falls, Texas; Andrew Poole of Atlanta, Georgia; and Graham St. John of Portland, Maine; his niece, Nicole St. John, of Seattle, Washington; and his great-niece, Tybee Poole, of Brandon, Florida. He is also survived by his step-children: Julie Harris of Matthews; Linda Bingham of Indian Trail; and Jeffrey Harris of Marietta, Georgia, the children of his late wife, Betty Robinson Poole.
He was a former member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and Trinity on the Hill Methodist Church in Augusta, Georgia where he lived for many years before his retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and built and gave away many rocking horses and wooden toys to the children of friends and relatives in Augusta and elsewhere.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 4, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service at 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte with burial to follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
